After serving in the US Navy during World War II, he converted his father's shoe-findings shop into a thriving leathercrafters business, sold it for a "backdoor" listing on the New York Stock Exchange, then won it back in a bitter battle with management. In 1963, he acquired control of Radio Shack, a floundering Boston electronics retailer with nine stores, and built it into the world's largest consumer electronics chain in one of the great success stories of American retailing. ` ! !
