Untitled
by Diane Arbus

A mysterious and tender body of images that has remained largely unseen, Untitled is the third volume of Arbus's work and the only one devoted exclusively to a single project. Taken at residences for the mentally retarded between 1969 and 1971, these photographs achieve a lyricism, an emotional purity that sets them apart from all her other accomplishments. 52 photos.

Little Things in a Big Country
by Hannah Hinchman

A unique alchemy of art and natural history—a four-color hand-lettered and illustrated tale of a year's rambles in the northern Rockies. Whether chasing gophers (Sisu) or flirting with cowboys at the Buckhorn Bar (Hannah), artist Hannah Hinchman and her dog Sisu are excellent guides to some of the wildest country left in America. Treading carefully near a sandhill crane's nest, testing the ice on the river, and marveling at the seasonal influx of ducks, this pair of curious naturalists takes us into the intimate corners of western Montana, inquiring into all natural phenomena—which Hannah then captures on the page in detailed sketches, notes, and watercolors. If Annie Dillard were an artist, she might have composed a book like this. But few writers, or artists, can bring words and images together like Hannah Hinchman. Insightful, funny, and personal, she not only enables us to enter her own particular patch of the natural world, she also teaches us to see our own, bringing to her work an exceptional unity of hand, eye, and heart. Four-color, hand-lettered throughout.

The Scientists
by John R. Gribbin

A wonderfully readable account of scientific development over the past five hundred years, focusing on the lives and achievements of individual scientists, by the bestselling author of In Search of Schrödinger’s Cat In this ambitious new book, John Gribbin tells the stories of the people who have made science, and of the times in which they lived and worked. He begins with Copernicus, during the Renaissance, when science replaced mysticism as a means of explaining the workings of the world, and he continues through the centuries, creating an unbroken genealogy of not only the greatest but also the more obscure names of Western science, a dot-to-dot line linking amateur to genius, and accidental discovery to brilliant deduction. By focusing on the scientists themselves, Gribbin has written an anecdotal narrative enlivened with stories of personal drama, success and failure. A bestselling science writer with an international reputation, Gribbin is among the few authors who could even attempt a work of this magnitude. Praised as “a sequence of witty, information-packed tales” and “a terrific read” by The Times upon its recent British publication, The Scientists breathes new life into such venerable icons as Galileo, Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein and Linus Pauling, as well as lesser lights whose stories have been undeservedly neglected. Filled with pioneers, visionaries, eccentrics and madmen, this is the history of science as it has never been told before.

Balance . As New. 1992. First Edition. Trade Paperback. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall 0-9632724-4-6 Signed by Author Steve was in town a few years ago, and we got to talking about "stuff", and I told him I'd found a copy of his book in my mom's things after she died, and that she had really liked the book. He said he had a few left over, and, even though he's now living on the East Coast, he said he'd get a few copies to me, and even autograph them! So, he did! This is the story of a Washington walk by Steve, who worked with the Disabled in Port Angeles in the 1990's, his disabled friend Reggie Feckley (who still lives here with some friends of ours who used to rent our house.), and Steve's German Shepard Dixie, that he rescued from a Louisiana pound when he was on a cross country walk a couple of years earlier. (Dixie passed away in the mid 90's. A wonderful story of trust and the necessity of setting goals and the power of dreams. Enjoy!. (Steve also played Dracula in a play of that title with me in the 90's...I played Von Helsing, and it was great!!) . (more information)
