O-Bon in Chimunesu: A Community Remembered
Lang, Catherine
Arsenal Pulp Press, 1996. Trade Paperback. Very Good. Japanese Canadians lived and thrived in Chumainus on Vancouver Island - until the Second World War brought evacuation and irrevocable change. In 1990, they held a reunion during O-bon, the annual Buddhist festival for the dead. Catherine Lang's interviews with surviving community members form the basis of these portraits. O-bon in Chimunesu is a compelling depiction of a broken community mended through time and memory." - Indigo--- Toronto Store Pick-up Available. O-Bon in Chimunesu (Chemainus): A Community Remembered
Lang, Catherine
Vancouver, BC, Canada: Arsenal Pulp Press, Limited, 1996 287 pages including index and two sections of black and white photographic reproductions. "A vivid and realistic portrayal of a Japanese-Canadian community which disappeared in 1942. An admirable accomplishment." - Frank Moritsugu, Journalist. A very important work. Prior to World War II the town of Chemainus ("Chimunesu") on Vancouver Island was home to a thriving community of Japanese Canadians. They were interned in the British Columbia interior in 1942 and not allowed to return until 1949. However, most decided to take up roots elsewhere, and their significant community in Chemainus was relegated to memory. Author attended a 1991 reunion of these people in Chemainus during the O-bon festival. The reunion formed the impetus for this book, which collects poignant personal narratives by Japanese-Canadians about their lives in Chemainus before internment. Faint wear. Clean and unmarked. Glossy illustrated covers. Excellent copy.. Soft Cover. Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. ( more information) Offered by RareNonFiction.com (Canada)
