Summary
In this novel, Kien, once in the infantry at Hanoi, must now retrieve and bury the dead bodies from one of the bloodiest battles of the Vietnam War. As he does so, he reflects on his youth, and then moves on to a career as a writer in Hanoi, trying to make sense of the war itself and the terrible savageries he has witnessed. This is the first novel of the Vietnam War published in the West that is told from the point of view of the North Vietnamese.

Meditations in Green
by Stephen Wright
Sardonic, searing, seductive and surreal, the award-winning Meditations in Green is regarded by many as the best novel of the Vietnam War. It is a kaleidoscopic collage that whirls about an indelible array of images and characters: perverted Winky, who opted for the army to stay off of welfare; eccentric Payne, who’s obsessed with the film he’s making of the war; bucolic Claypool, who’s irrevocably doomed to a fate worse than death. Just to mention a few. And floating at the center of this psychedelic spin is Spec. 4 James Griffin. In country, Griffin studies the jungle of carpet bomb photos as he fights desperately to keep his grip on reality. And battling addiction stateside after his tour, he studies the green of household plants as he struggles mightily to get his sanity back. With mesmerizing action and Joycean interior monologues, Stephen Wright has created a book that is as much an homage to the darkness of war as it is a testament to the transcendence of art.

THE SORROW OF WAR: A NOVEL OF NORTH VIETNAM
Ninh, Bao
New York: Riverhead Books, 1993 From reviewers: Dramatic
Chronicles the wrecked lives of North Vietnamese soldiers who enter the war with blazing idealism, only to sink deeper into disillusionment and pessimism as everything they know falls apart around them. Will force American readers to acknowledge how little they still understand of the long war that left such a legacy of grief and guilt in their own country. Powerful
Makes North Vietnamese soldiers human, wrenched by the same fear and pain as young Americans. A remarkable emotional intensity builds as the author mixes harrowing flashback scenes from the war with images from pastoral youth, from his heartbreaking homecoming after a decade away, and finally from the nightmare calamity that ties everything else together and gives the book its tragic power
Finally puts an acceptable human face on a group of people long without one. You will never think of North Vietnam and its people the same way again. . Trade Paperback. New/New. ( more information) Offered by Eastwind Books of Berkeley (United States)
