Summary
Jerry Battle's family is large, multicultural, and riddled with problems. His Korean wife drowned in the swimming pool 20 years ago. He has broken up with his longtime Puerto Rican girlfriend, whom he misses. His daughter, pregnant by her Asian-American boyfriend, has a life-threatening illness. His son is a bit of a wastrel. And his elderly father is frustrated by the "assisted living center" where he has been forced to move. To get away from it all, Jerry goes up in his private plane-an indulgence that, he realizes as events move to a conclusion, is not the way to deal with the complications of a rich life. A New York Times Notable Book for 2004.

Media Reviews
"Beautiful writing, richly drawn characters, and a powerful sense of life enduring in spite of it all. A fine and very moving performance."
-- Kirkus
"Jerry Battle is the kind of guy who can charm you into forgiving his small failings, and even his large ones, not only because he's fun to be around but because, deep down, you suspect he's a serious and decent man. ALOFT is a lot like him." -- A. O. Scott

About Schmidt
by Louis Begley
"A fine new novel... The great pleasure of reading Louis Begley [is] his exceptional literary intelligence." The New York Times Book Review "Begley again demonstrates that he can reveal the complexities of society and personality with a clear eye and graceful style... Morethan meets the requirements of graceful fiction." TimeProud, traditional, and impeccably organized, Albert Schmidt is a button-down lawyer of the old school. But now, after years of carefulmanagement, his life is slowly unraveling. His beloved wife has recently died. He stumbles--or is he being pushed?--into earlyretirement. And his daughter, his only child, is planning to marry a man Schmidt cannot approve of, for reasons he can scarcely admit, even to himself. As Schmidt gropes for resolutions, he finds unexpected hope in an intense passion that comes out of the blue.Set in the Hamptons and Manhattan, infused with black humor and startling eroticism, About Schmidt is both a meditation on lonelinessand on the power of romance to unlock the most impenetrable recesses of the heart. "Comical, tough, unsparing; it is as if Louis Auchincloss had exchanged the kid gloves for brass knuckles... Interesting and nervy." The Washington Post Book World "A powerful story of a man's fall from grace... The Remains of the Day come[s] to mind." Publishers Weekly (starred review)

The Golden Bowl
by Henry James
A rich American art-collector and his daughter Maggie buy in for themselves and to their greater glory a beautiful young wife and a noble husband. They do not know that Charlotte and Prince Amerigo were formerly lovers, nor that on the eve of the Prince's marriage they had discovered, in a Bloomsbury antique shop, a golden bowl with a secret flaw.

A House for Mr. Biswas
by V.S. Naipaul
The book that first brought Naipaul worldwide acclaim, this richly comic novel tells the moving story of a man without a single asset who enters a life devoid of opportunity, and whose tumble-down house becomes a potent symbol of the search for identity in a postcolonial world.

Mayor of Casterbridge
by Thomas Hardy

A Good House
by Bonnie Burnard
A Good House begins in 1949 in Stonebrook, Ontario, home to the Chambers family. The postwar boom and hope for the future color every facet of life: the possibilities seem limitless for Bill, his wife Sylvia, and their three children. In the fifty years that follow, the possibilities narrow. Sylvia's untimely death marks her family indelibly but in ways only time will reveal. Paul's perfect marriage yields an imperfect child. Daphne unabashedly follows an unconventional path, while Patrick discovers that his happiness requires a series of compromises. Bill confronts the onset of old age less gracefully than anticipated, and throughout, his second wife, Margaret, remains, surprisingly, the family anchor. Carol Shields, in The Ottawa Citizen, described A Good House as "the finest novel published in some years in our country."
