Summary
Daniel Deronda, raised by Gentiles, discovers the truth about his heritage and seeks his Jewish roots, finding that Judaism-and, particularly, Zionism-gives meaning to his life. Daniel's story intersects with that of the beautiful and spoiled Gwendolyn Harleth, who marries the jaded, depraved aristocrat Grandcourt and lives to repent her bad judgment. As the novel's moral center, Daniel provides a role model for Gwendolyn and, eventually, becomes a revered leader of the Zionist movement. DANIEL DERONDA, first published in 1876, is remarkable for its sympathetic and closely observed portrait of its Jewish characters-unusual in the Victorian period, when Jews were routinely vilified or caricatured in fiction. But it is also a deeply intelligent novel that explores two vastly different worlds with subtle acuity, whether the plot takes it to the ascetic study of a Jewish scholar or to the casinos where Gwendolyn routinely gambles away her money. The main characters' two remarkable journeys-Daniel's back to the religion of his people, and Gwendolyn's from selfishness to wisdom-are parallel quests toward what is always Eliot's true subject: the progress of the mind and the heart toward self-discovery, a preoccupation that was more characteristic of modernist fiction than of the novels being written in the mid-19th century.

The Captive and the Fugitive
by Marcel Proust
In The Captive, Proust's narrator is living with Albertine in his mother's Paris apartment. He is chronically concerned about who she may or may not love. In The Fugitive, Albertine is irretrievably lost to him, and he retreats to Venice, where he receives a telegram from Gilberte, Swann's red-haired daughter. Rich with irony, the story inspires meditations on desire, homosexuality, music, and the art of introspection. The final volume of a new, definitive text of A la recherche du temps perdu was published by the Bibliotheque de la Pleiade in 1989. For this authoritative English-language edition, D. J. Enright has revised the late Terence Kilmartin's acclaimed reworking of C. K. Scott Moncrieff's translation to take into account the new French editions.

Time Regained/a Guide to Proust
by Marcel Proust
The final volume of In Search of Lost Time chronicles the years of World War I, when, as M. de Charlus reflects on a moonlit walk, Paris threatens to become another Pompeii. Years later, after the war's end, Proust's narrator returns to Paris, where Mme. Verdurin has become the Princesse de Guermantes. He reflects on time, reality, jealousy, artistic creation, and the raw material for literature - his past life. This volume also includes the indispensable Guide to Proust, an index to all six volumes of the novel. A Conspiracy of Paper
by David Liss

Lady Chatterley's Lover
by D. H. Lawrence
With her soft brown hair, lithe figure and big, wondering eyes, Constance Chatterley is possessed of a certain vitality. Yet she is deeply unhappy; married to an invalid, she is almost as inwardly paralysed as her husband Clifford is paralysed below the waist. It is not until she finds refuge in the arms of Mellors the game-keeper that she feels regenerated. Together they move from an outer world of chaos towards an inner world of fulfillment. Included here, in his essay A PROPOS OF 'LADY CHATTERLEY'S LOVER', are Lawrence's own, final thoughts on male-female relationships in the modern world. This Penguin edition reproduces the newly established Cambridge text, the first edition ever to restore to Lawrence's most famous work the words he wrote and the first to correct authoritatively the 1928 Florence edition which Lawrence personally supervised.

American
by Henry James
When in France the marriage of American millionaire, Christopher Newman, to Claire de Bellegarde is opposed by her family, he finds a secret in their past.
