The Republican Noise Machine
by David Brock
In The Republican Noise Machine , David Brock skillfully documents perhaps the most important but least understood political development of the last thirty years: how the Republican Right has won political power and hijacked public discourse in the United States. Brock, a former right-wing insider and the author of the New York Times bestseller Blinded by the Right , uses his keen understanding of the strategies, tactics, financing, and personalities of the American right wing to demonstrate how the once-fringe phenomenon of right-wing media has all but subsumed the regular media conversation, shaped the national consciousness, and turned American politics sharply to the right. Brock documents how in the last several decades the GOP built a powerful media machine--newspapers and magazines, think tanks, talk radio networks, op-ed columnists, the FOX News Channel, Christian Right broadcasting, book publishers, and high-traffic internet sites--to sell conservatism to the public and discredit its opponents. This unabashedly biased multibillion-dollar communications empire disregards journalistic ethics and universal standards of fairness and accuracy, manufacturing "news" that is often bought and paid for by a tight network of corporate-backed foundations and old family fortunes. By dissecting the appeal, techniques, and reach of the booming right-wing media market, Brock demonstrates that it is largely based on bigotry, ignorance, and emotional manipulation closely tied to America’s longstanding cultural divisions and the buying power of anti-intellectual traditionalists. From the disputed 2000 presidential election to the war with Iraq to the political battles of 2004, Brock's penetrating analysis of right-wing media theories and methodology reveals that the Republican Right views the media as an extension of a broader struggle for political power. By tracing the political impact of right-wing media, Brock shows how disproportionate conservative influence in the media is integrally linked to the Republican Right’s current domination of all three branches of government, to the propping up of the Bush administration, and to the inability of Democrats to voice their opposition to this political sea change or to compete on an even playing field. As only an ex-conservative intimately familiar with the imperatives of the American right wing could, David Brock suggests ways in which concerned Americans can begin to redress the conservative ascendancy and cut through the propagandistic fog. Writing with verve and deep insight, he reaches far beyond typical bromides about media bias to produce an invaluable account of the rise of right-wing media and its political consequences. Promising to be the political book of the year, The Republican Noise Machine will transform the raging yet heretofore unsatisfying debate over the politics of the media for years to come.

Why I Am a Reagan Conservative
by Michael K. Deaver
Former Ronald Reagan advisor and bestselling author Michael K. Deaver gathers the nation's leading figures to define conservatism, explore Reagan's impact on conservative philosophy, and examine what it means to be a conservative in America today. In Why I Am a Reagan Conservative , the most powerful minds in politics and media come together to provide the reasons behind their beliefs, offer personal accounts of their time in politics and government, and explain the late Ronald Reagan's impact on the Grand Old Party. Among them, Bill Frist believes the roots of a person's ideology can be traced to their life experience. Robert D. Novak considers that what really makes a conservative is believing the government is always the problem, rather than the solution. Ken Mehlman expresses that freedom is the foundation of international peace, and the renewed commitment of each generation prevents its collapse. J. C. Watts, Jr., remembers Ronald Reagan, who challenged America to think about what it wanted to become. Bob Dole discusses a long legacy of timeless values, from the bleak 1930s to the difficult days after 9/11. Orrin G. Hatch discourses on how the ReaganRevolution restored the essential American values -- individualism and enterprise, initiativeand optimism, charity and sacrifice -- in all of us. And many more. Through them not only do we learn about the people who share with us their thoughts on politics and worldly situations, but we also gain an understanding of the modern conservative mind and movement and all its precepts. As the power of the Republican party continues to grow, a bold new conservative movement is taking form in America. This timely and unprecedented new collection will elucidate and explore the impact of the man who fueled the fire of a rapidly growing political movement.

Buck Wild: How Republicans Broke the Bank and Became the Party of Big Government
Slivinski, Stephen A
Thomas Nelson. As New in As New dust jacket 2006. Hardcover. Hardcover with dust jacket, like new, clean, tight. There is a 1/2" tear to the front of the dust jacket as well as edgewear over all. Nonfiction. ; 1.1 x 8.4 x 5.7 Inches; 260 pages; One chart in this succinct, readable book compares overall federal spending under presidential administrations since Johnson's; another chart shows that spending minus military, homeland security, and entitlement (mostly Social Security and Medicare) outlays. The first shows Bush II outspending every administration since LBJ's; the second, every one but Nixon and Ford's. What happened to the party that railed against big government? Well, it caved to "the smell of the marble." The moneyed ambience of a capital crawling with organizational lobbyists and devoid of ordinary-citizen advocates seduced would-be budget hawks of the Reagan and especially the Contract-with-America revolutions. In chronicling this GOP collapse, Slivinski shows that both revolutions reined in spending early on, and that a small band of congresspersons remained both hard on spending and reelectable. The spending orgy in reaction to but by no means spent directly on hurricane-damaged New Orleans revived the budget hawks and may provoke a fight within the Republican Party. Meanwhile, Slivinski argues that having one party control the White House and the other Congress is more economical--look at Clinton's tenure. . ( more information) Offered by kbooks (Canada)
