Reading David
by Lissa Weinstein
A parent's guide to dealing with a child suffering from learning disabilities draws on the author's own experience of coping with a son diagnosed with dyslexia, revealing the challenging and rewarding odyssey of teaching David how to read and the impact of that journey on the mother-son relationship.

Learning Disabilities and Related Disorders
by Janet W. Lerner
Designed to help pre-service teachers and practicing professionals evaluate and aid students with disabilities, this comprehensive text is guided by three main principles: to aid in the assessment and evaluation of students with learning disabilities, to demonstrate Learning Disabled (LD) theory and its practical applications through the use of case studies, and to provide the most up-to-date information on recent developments and topics of debate in the field. The Tenth Edition continues to stress familiarity with state and national standards, specifically those from the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC). The issues surrounding diversity, namely assessment and evaluation of students from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and inclusion are discussed at length. New! Web Site Icons are located in the text margins next to URLs for quick reference. Icons are also used to indicate when additional content on the given topic can be found on the text Web site. New! "LD in Practice: Strategies for the General Education Classroom" features have been added throughout the text to provide additional information for the general education teacher. New! A reference guide appears at the end of the text as a directive to relevant resource materials including case studies, student assessment tests, Web Sites, video and print materials, and professional organizations. New! The chapter on Attention Deficit Disorder has been expanded to include additional information on neuro-developmental problems. A reduced text length is more suitable for semester-length courses—the first two chapters have been combined to provide a broader view of the history of learning disabilities. More coverage of standards, particularly CEC Standards in regard to schools, teachers, and students is evident throughout the text. A reference chart indicating where specific CEC Standards are addressed is featured in the inside cover. Coverage of diversity has been increased and is highlighted by new callouts in the text.

Mind over Math
by Stanley Kogelman
Math difficulties are more a matter of attitude, not aptitude. The authors debunk ``math myths,'' explore the roots of math anxiety and demonstrate that doing math is not really so different from any other skill.

On the Shoulders of Giants
by
A vision of the richness of mathematics expressed in essays on change, dimension, quantity, shape, and uncertainty. These essays expand on the idea of mathematics as the language and science of patterns.

The Number Sense
by Stanislas Dehaene
Dehaene, a mathematician turned cognitive neuropsychologist, begins with the eye-opening discovery that animals, including rats, pigeons, raccoons, and chimpanzees, can perform simple mathematical calculations. He goes on to describe ingenious experiments that show that human infants also have a rudimentary number sense. Dehaene shows that the animal and infant abilities for dealing with small numbers and with approximate calculations persist in human adults and have a strong influence on the way we represent numbers and perform more complex calculations later in life. According to Dehaene, it was the invention of symbolic systems for writing and talking about numerals that started us on the climb to higher mathematics. He traces the cultural history of numbers and shows how this cultural evolution reflects the constraints that our brain architecture places on learning and memory. Dehaene also explores the unique abilities of idiot savants and mathematical geniuses, asking whether simple cognitive explanations can be found for their exceptional talents. In a final section, the cerebral substrates of arithmetic are described. We meet people whose brain lesions made them lose highly specific aspects of their numerical abilities - one man, in fact, who thinks that two and two is three! Such lesion data converge nicely with the results of modern imaging techniques (PET scans, MRI, and EEG) to help pinpoint the brain circuits that encode numbers. From sex differences in arithmetic to the pros and cons of electronic calculators, the adequacy of the brain-computer metaphor, or the interactions between our representations of space and of number, Dehaene reaches many provocative conclusions that will intrigue anyone interested in mathematics or the mind.
