The Book of Wheat Weaving and Straw Craft
by Morgyn Geoffry Owens-Celli
Never mind if the only wheat weaving you've ever seen was Grandpa's old straw hat; there's much, much more to this famous old craft, beloved because you make your projects from an easily available natural material, with an easily learned technique. This huge array of designs ranges from simple but lovely plaits to creations fit for museums. Once you pick up the basic techniques (as easy as braiding hair), you'll never run out of ideas for projects. The ones shown here in full-color photos feature House Blessings for bountiful harvests; Love Knots that bring good luck in love (ever hear of "tying the knot?"); and projects using ancient and traditional symbols such as Earth Mother, Sunspray, a Folk Angel, and a Pennsylvania Harvest Hex Sign. International designs range from a Moroccan God's Eye to a St. Brigit's Cross, from a Czech Bouquet to a Lithuanian songbird. Each woven project has a challenge and a time rating.

Ikat: Splendid Silks of Central Asia
Gibbon, Kate Fitz & Hale, Andrew
London, U.K.: Lawrence King, 1999. The Ikat silks of 19th-century Central Asia are unrivalled in their inventive designs, resplendent colours and technical mastery. Ikat is an ancient technique, in which colours are applied to silk warp yarns in a multi-stage, tie-dye resist method before being woven. Highlighting the Guido Goldman collection, this study incorporates original research in Russia and Uzbekistan, and examines the complex history of Central Asia. The Goldman collection is considered the largest and most comprehensive collection of wall hangings and robes produced during Asia's finest period of silk production. The authors detail the silk trade in central Asia, weavers' workshops and guilds, the making of ikats, and design sources and influences. Their discussion of the role of textiles as wall hangings in domestic life and as men's robes and women's dresses give life to the complex weaving tradition. A chapter on technique describes the different stages of production, and an analysis of the evolution and chronology of ikat design shows the rich cross-fertilization of influences between Ikat design, embroidery, carpets, jewellery and ceramics. 208 pgs. Lavishly illustrated. Dustjacket in mylar.. ISBN: 1856691519 . First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Fine. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
