PALE SHADOW
Skinner, Robert
Poisoned Pen Pr., 2001. SIGNED in person, shadow on bottom panel, loose binding shows only on verso of title page, otherwise a very good book and near fine dustjacket. The time is 1940, the place, the Gentilly home of Linda Blanc, in New Orleans, where she is found tortured to death. The NOPD Sergeant Israel Daggett is unable to get to the bottom of the black woman's death until a Treasury Agent shows up and tells Israel that Linda was the girlfriend of a bootlegger-then-counterfeiter, named Luis Martinez. This puts Daggett on Luis's trail; it seems, in competetion with Wesley Farrell over across town. Wesley has his own reasons---and, to compound matters, Martinez is being chased by a Spaniard named Santiago Compasso, the boss of the counterfeiting gang. The key to the operation is missing and Compasso is pissed off because business is stalled, but also because he has to answer to someone else. An entertaining, humorous, convoluted plot.. Compasso is worried, not only because his operation is loused up, but because he has someone of his own to answer to...
