Summary
With an introduction that includes giving thanks for a pair of comfortable shoes, as only someone who spent the first 15 years of his life mostly barefoot could, the autobiography of the late Johnny Cash is, like his music, simple and eloquent. Discovering country music via Roy Acuff and the Louvin Brothers, among others, he became part of the immortal Sun Records stable of musicians that also included Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Carl Perkins; he recounts his initial meeting with legendary Sun Studios owner and producer Sam Phillips, his shaky attempts at recording his debut single (it took over 30 takes), his thrill at performing his first hit "Cry, Cry, Cry" on the LOUISIANA HAYRIDE radio show, and his first Cadillac. He's also candid about his amphetamine and alcohol addiction, admitting the constant conflict between his darker impulses and his long-standing religious convictions. Throughout, Cash leaves detached analysis and precise recounting of minute detail to music scholars; but what is lost here in objectivity is gained in a series of remarkable vignettes steeped in country music history, all told through the filter of co-author Patrick Carr's superb prose recreation of the singer's trademark laconic, baritone drawl.

Publisher's Notes
He is "The Man in Black." Country music legend. The "quintessential American troubadour." An icon of rugged individualism, who's been to hell and back, and tells the tale as never before. In this unforgettable autobiography, Johnny Cash talks straight about the highs and lows, the struggles and hard-won triumphs, and the people who have shaped him. In his own words, Cash sets the record straight--and dispels a few myths--as he looks unsparingly at his remarkable life: from his turbulent past to the joys of the present to his plans down the road. Here, too, are the friends of a lifetime, including Willie Nelson, Roy Orbison, Bob Dylan, and Dr. Billy Graham. As powerful and memorable as one of his classic songs, Cash is filled with the candor, wit, and wisdom of a man who has truly "walked the line."

Merle Haggard's My House of Memories
by Tom Carter
Free and easy the Hag's road has never been. Losing his father at age nine, he led an out-of-control youth capped by a stretch in San Quentin preceded by his first of five marriages. Toughing his way through the ranks of country music (starting with the dives of Bakerfield's notorious "Beer Can Hill"), he finally reached the #1 spot in 1966 with "I'm a Lonesome Fugitive." THE RUNNING KIND is named for one of his biggest hits. A period of great personal tribulation, the lasts two decades have also established Haggard's legendary status alongside such immortals as Willie Nelson and George Jones.

Bruce Springsteen's America
by Robert Coles
In this compelling book, Robert Coles, the celebrated Harvard professor and Pulitzer Prize–winning author, turns his attention to popular music legend Bruce Springsteen, and to the powerful impact Springsteen’s work has had both on the lives of his audience and on this country’s literary tradition. Coles places Springsteen in the pantheon of American artists—Walt Whitman, William Carlos Williams, Dorothea Lange, and Walker Percy, among others—who understood and were inspired by their “traveling companions in time,” the ordinary people of their eras. With wisdom and a unique personal perspective, Coles explores Springsteen’s words as contemporary American poetry, and offers firsthand accounts of how people interact with them: A trucker listens to “Blinded by the Light” during long, lonely nights and reminisces about his mother; a schoolteacher is astonished when a usually silent student offers a comparison between “Nebraska” and Conrad’s Heart of Darkness; a policeman responds to “American Skin (41 Shots),” reflecting on his own role in his family and community. As these people, and others, candidly discuss the meaning Springsteen’s words have in their lives, Coles listens and, with the special insight and compassion that are the trademarks of his art, sheds new light on “The Boss,” removing the legendary American rock musician from fan-filled stadiums and placing the poet in a greater social, cultural, and philosophical context. Coles sees Springsteen as a representative of a uniquely American documentary tradition—as a sing-ing and traveling poet who does not simply embody the culture of which he is a part but fully engages it, interacting with its people and creating a conversation that has helped to shape a distinct way of looking at, and living, American life today.

Cash - Johnny Cash: The Autobiography
Cash, Johnny with Patirick Carr
Harper Paperbacks August 5, 1998. 8vo softcover 433pp very good. A humble, happy look back from the man in black. Johnny Cash answers to many names; he's JR to childhood friends and family, John to bandmates, and Johnny to fans. ``Cash'' is the name wife June Carter reserves for ``the star, the egomaniac.'' The star gets plenty of ink here, from the early days at Sun Records--with Elvis, Carl Perkins, and Jerry Lee Lewis--to his current status as a darling of the alternative rock set. But it's the private man who's most compelling and surprisingly complex. Cash writes candidly of his recurring addiction to amphetamines and his concomitant shortcomings as a father, addresses his spirituality without sounding maudlin, and displays genuine humility at his success and very little bitterness at his abandonment by the country music establishment. .
