Collected Screenplays
by Andrei Tarkovsky

The most important Soviet filmmaker after Sergei Eisenstein, Andrei Tarkovsky produced only seven films in his lifetime. Catapulted into international recognition in 1962 with his first feature, Ivan's Childhood, Tarkovsky brought us most of his legendary films from behind the iron curtain, including Andrei Rublev, Solaris, and The Stalker. Tarkovsky defected to the West after Nostalgia was shot in Italy in 1983; his last feature, The Sacrifice, was filmed in Sweden with many of Igmar Bergman's collaborators. Perhaps more relevant to contemporary audiences than any other Russian filmmaker, and one of the greatest practitioners of his art, Tarkovsky's oeuvre spans many genres and many decades. This complete collection of his screenplays includes unproduced screenplays and production notes from his completed films.

Paul Schrader Collected Screenplays
by Paul Schrader

Since the seventies, Paul Schrader has been hailed as one of America's most gifted screenwriters. From his work with Martin Scorsese, such as The Last Temptation of Christ and Raging Bull , to the films of his own direction, such as Mishima and Affliction , Schrader has created a dark and affecting body of work that has had a profound effect on cinematic storytelling. The works in this volume represent some of his key moments as a writer and a director, including the script for what is perhaps his crowning achievement: Taxi Driver -- one of the most influential films of the seventies and an American classic.

Six Screenplays by Robert Riskin
by Patrick McGilligan

Screenwriter Robert Riskin (1897-1955) was a towering figure even among the giants of Hollywood's Golden Age. Known for his unique blend of humor and romance, wisecracking and idealism, Riskin teamed with director Frank Capra to produce some of his most memorable films. Pat McGilligan has collected six of the best Riskin scripts: Platinum Blonde (1931), American Madness (1932), It Happened One Night (1934), Mr. Deeds Goes to Town (1936), Lost Horizon (1937), and Meet John Doe (1941 ). All of them were directed by Capra, and although Capra's work has been amply chronicled and celebrated, Riskin's share in the collaboration has been overlooked since his death. McGilligan provides the "backstory" for the forgotten half of the team, indispensable counterpoint to the director's self-mythologizing autobiography -- and incidentally the missing link in any study of Capra's career. Riskin's own career, although interrupted by patriotic duty and cut short by personal tragedy, produced as consistent, entertaining, thoughtful, and enduring a body of work as any Hollywood writer's. Those who know and love these vintage films will treasure these scripts. McGilligan's introduction offers new information and insights for fans, scholars, and general readers.
