Summary
The author of the acclaimed HITLER'S WILLING EXECUTIONERS presents damning evidence by which he intends to prove that the Roman Catholic clergy were willing supporters of the Holocaust. He then addresses the issue of how the Church can "repair" or make amends for the wrongs done in its name.

Media Reviews
"As in his previous book, Goldhagen has assembled an impressive body of evidence, not all of it new....And once more, Goldhagen makes his case more as prosecutor than historian, with an insistent adversarial tone....In A MORAL RECKONING That strident tone seems all the more emphatic because the book is so remarkably repetitious. The same points are made, the same arguments are advanced, more or less the same sentences are reiterated, over and over again....All of which is a pity, since the subject is profoundly important, Goldhagen is a diligent researcher and much of what he says needs saying." -- Geoffrey Wheatcroft

Publisher's Notes
With his first book, Hitler’s Willing Executioners, Daniel Jonah Goldhagen dramatically revised our understanding of the role ordinary Germans played in the Holocaust. Now he brings his formidable powers of research and argument to bear on the Catholic Church and its complicity in the destruction of European Jewry. What emerges is a work that goes far beyond the familiar inquiries—most of which focus solely on Pope Pius XII—to address an entire history of hatred and persecution that culminated, in some cases, in an active participation in mass-murder.
More than a chronicle, A Moral Reckoning is also an assessment of culpability and a bold attempt at defining what actions the Church must take to repair the harm it did to Jews—and to repair itself. Impressive in its scholarship, rigorous in its ethical focus, the result is a book of lasting importance.

Yours Is a Precious Witness
by Margherita Marchione
The fiftieth anniversary of World War II and the Holocaust inspired new memoirs, documentaries and historical studies, but few examined the hundreds of personal stories of Italians who tried to rescue Jewish people from certain death, and the important role played in those efforts by the Catholic Church, especially by Pope Pius XII and many parishes and religious orders of men and women. Mainly using untapped oral histories of Italian Jews and Catholics, this book shows that Catholics in Italy who saved Jews firmly believed they were doing so in consonance with the Pope's wishes. Readers will get to know these courageous individuals through their inspiring memoirs. Yours is a Precious Witness strives to draw a more personal portrait of Pius XII. He spoke loudly - not in words, which would have resulted in Nazi retaliations, but in actions that directly saved thousands of Jews. Convents, monasteries and papal buildings in Italy became havens for refugees.

Hitler and the Vatican
by Peter Godman
Documents the controversial relationship between the Catholic Church and the Nazis, citing how a communist-wary Vatican maintained a policy of non-interference in Nazi persecutions and withheld crucial information about Nazi activities.

Hidden Encyclical of Pius XI
by Georges Passelecq
In June 1938, after his attempts at diplomacy with Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy had failed, Pope Pius XI ordered an American Jesuit, Father John LaFarge, to compose an encyclical denouncing racism and anti-Semitism. The result was a draft called Humani Generis Unitas (The Unity of the Human Race), which LaFarge produced with the help of two other priests. But after Pope Pius XI died early in 1939, his successor, Pius XII, stood by in silence as Nazi Germany began to carry out its Final Solution. The unpublished encyclical was buried in a secret archive, its three authors bound by a vow of silence. For decades Vatican scholars either minimized the importance of Humani Generis Unitas or questioned the document's very existence - until Thomas Breslin, a Jesuit seminarian, uncovered the manuscript in the late sixties. In a disturbing tale of archival intrigue and historical investigation, Georges Passelecq, a Belgian monk, and Bernard Suchecky, a Jewish historian, describe their quest to recover the draft of the encyclical. Undaunted by interminable delays - evasions that only deepened suspicions of Church complicity thirty years after Vatican II - the authors steadfastly pursued their inquiries. Here, published for the first time in English, is the document the Vatican kept hidden for half a century. By examining the circumstances of its creation and the consequences of its suppression, The Hidden Encyclical of Pius XI casts new light on the relations between the Vatican, state-sponsored anti-Semitism, and the Jews during World War II.
