Summary
Dale Stewart, the protagonist in Simmons's 1991 horror novel SUMMER OF NIGHT, returns. Now he's 51, with his university career and marriage in shambles after an obsessive affair, and he's off to his boyhood home in Illinois to hole up in an isolated farmhouse and attempt to write through the winter. Eerie messages begin to show up on his computer screen, and packs of black dogs stalk the property. Throw in a gang of neo-Nazis, a bully from Stewart's past, and Michelle Stafney, the former object of his adolescent fantasies, and Stewart is in for a long, bleak winter.

Media Reviews
"[A] tense, densely detailed novel....Simmons's capacity to articulate the reality of acute melancholia is both impressive and unsettling....[A]n intelligent, uncommonly ambitious novel that offers both the traditional satisfactions of well-made horror fiction and the subtler satisfactions of a first-rate psychological thriller." -- Bill Sheehan

Publisher's Notes
A once-respected college professor and novelist, Dale Stewart has sabotaged his career and his marriage -- and now darkness is closing in on him. In the last hours of Halloween he has returned to the dying town of Elm Haven, his boyhood home, where he hopes to find peace in isolation. But moving into a long-deserted farmhouse on the far outskirts of town -- the one-time residence of a strange and brilliant friend who lost his young life in a grisly "accident" back in the terrible summer of 1960 -- is only the latest in his long succession of recent mistakes. Because Dale is not alone here. He has been followed to this house of shadows by private demons who are now twisting his reality into horrifying new forms. And a thick, blanketing early snow is starting to fall ...

Other Worlds
by Elizabeth Peters
One foggy evening, the most famous crime specialists in the world meet in an exclusive club, their minds on mystery. On the agenda, two tantalizing, unsolved cases of ghostly terror. New York Times bestselling author and unsurpassed mater of suspense Barbara Michaels delivers a fireside page-turner in the grand tradition with her latest book, Other Worlds. The smoky room glows with a mix of cigars, brandy, and genius. Those present include Harry Houdini, king of illusion; Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, father of the modern detective novel; Dr. Nandor Fodor, a psychoanalyst of international acclaim; and an elegant writer who can rival them all with her sleuthing talent. These maters of mystery put their minds to a pair of gripping stories--of families beset by poltergeistly pranks and bewitched by inexplicable horrors. Gripping puzzles, yes, but the terror is all too vicious and all too real. In the hallows of Tennessee, a family is threatened by a dire spirit whose predictions of despair and death come frighteningly true. In a small Connecticut town, a newly married widow and her children move into her second husband's home to find their lives possessed by an unimaginable demon. For the gathering at the club, a brilliant battle of wits is at hand. Were these villains phantoms from beyond or evildoers of flesh and blood? Each expert has a theory. Which of them is correct? Whether writing as Barbara Michaels or Elizabeth Peters, this author is a master chef crafting richly atmospheric, suspense-filled delights. Other Worlds is an up-all-nighter, guaranteed to still haunt in the morning--a tale as chilling by daylight as it is by darkness.

A Winter Haunting
Simmons, Dan
HarperTorch. January 1, 2003. Paperback. Near Fine. The old saw "You can't go home again" is a chilling understatement for this highly effective supernatural shocker, Simmons's first horror novel since Fires of Eden (1994) and a sequel to Summer of Night (1991). The latter was an eerie chronicle of a summer of lost innocence for a group of preadolesc ent chums who confront an entity of irrepressible evil in rural Elm Haven, Ill. Four decades later Dale Stewart, a survivor of that summer, has return ed to endure a winter of adult discontent: his wife has left him, his sidel ine career as a novelist is sputtering and a disastrous love affair has dri ven him to attempt suicide. Medicated to the gills for depression, Dale see ks inspiration for his next novel in a house that figured in events of the summer of 1960. But remnants of the old malign influence have survived and they manifest as vicious spectral dogs, threatening neo-Nazi punks, cryptic messages that appear magically on his computer screen and delusions that s uggest he's losing his mind. Simmons orchestrates his story's weird events craftily, introducing them as unremarkable details that only gradually show their dark side. In a nod to Henry James, whose psychological ghost story "The Jolly Corner" is repeatedly invoked, he blends jaw-dropping revelation s of spiritual intrusion with carefully manipulated challenges to the reade r's confidence in Dale's faculties and motivations. Though it features its share of palpable things that go bump in the night, this novel is most unse ttling in its portrait of personal demons of despair that imperceptibly emp ower them.
