Under threat of legal action from the real-life 'Kaethe' of the story, Allen Lane recalled all unsold copies from shops and warehouses and pulped them. The girl's name was changed to Karin and "Allen Lane" was removed from the half-title page, but the details on the verso of the title-page were not changed and the book continued to be sold as the 1st Edition- a very dubious practice which has caused confusion for buyers and sellers of this title, as the very common 2nd issue is of no value to collectors.
