Summary
As corporate sponsorship of female ice skating was rising, the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan fiasco exploded into the media, garnering new attention to the sport. The discovery of a plot to maim Kerrigan for Harding's benefit, and its subsequent legal and public relations fallout, sparked a number of writers and academics to speculate on the relationship of this incident to sports in general, women's sports in particular, and women's lives. "Women on Ice", is a collection of essays from writers who hail from a wide variety of fields.

Media Reviews
"...[O]riginal ideas, provocative research, bright writing, even humor-in short, some of the most engaging critical writing that I've read in a while. This is especially so when the writers avoid issues that apply to women's sports in general, concentrating on those that relate to skating in particular." -- Jeanne Schinto

Publisher's Notes
The attack on Nancy Kerrigan at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Detroit set the stage for a Winter Olympics spectacle: Tonya Harding versus Nancy Kerrigan. More than the war of genocide in Bosnia and President Clinton's first trip to Europe, more than David Letterman's mother's interview with the First Lady, these two young women were the center of a media frenzy that fascinated and repulsed millions of spectators. Women On Ice collects the writings of a diverse group of feminists who address and question our national obsession with Tonya and Nancy and what this tells us about perceptions of women in twentieth century America. Some of the essays focus on the events themselves--the"hit" on Nancy Kerrigan, a "beautiful young woman from a good family"; the life of struggle for Tonya Harding, "a beer-drinking, pick-up driving working class woman"; and how the attack on Kerrigan pitted the two women against each other, setting the stage for an Olympic showdown. About Face
by Dorinne K. Kondo
From Paris to Broadway, from Rising Sun to Miss Saigon, from high fashion to local college protests, Dorinne Kondo's About Face examines performances of race: the processes of racialization in the fashion and theater worlds, and the ways representations of Asia in Western popular culture reverberate in Asian and Asian American lives. About Face offers a dynamic, new vision of cultural politics: the politics of pleasure, the possibilities of subverting Orientalisms, and the continually emerging challenges to conventional definitions of race, gender, and nation.

A Critique of Postcolonial Reason
by Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak
Are the "culture wars" over? When did they begin? What is their relationship to gender struggle and the dynamics of class? In her first full treatment of postcolonial studies, a field that she helped define, Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak, one of the world's foremost literary theorists, poses these questions from within the postcolonial enclave. "We cannot merely continue to act out the part of Caliban, " Spivak writes; and her book is an attempt to understand and describe a more responsible role for the postcolonial critic. A Critique of Postcolonial Reason tracks the figure of the "native informant" through various cultural practices -- philosophy, history, literature -- to suggest that it emerges as the metropolitan hybrid. The book addresses feminists, philosophers, critics, and interventionist intellectuals, as they unite and divide. It ranges from Kant's analytic of the sublime to child labor in Bangladesh. Throughout, the notion of a Third World interloper as the pure victim of a colonialist oppressor emerges as sharply suspects the mud we sling at certain seemingly overbearing ancestors such as Marx and Kant may be the very ground we stand on. A major critical work, Spivak's book redefines and repositions the postcolonial critic, leading her through transnational cultural studies into considerations of globality.

Mappings
by Susan Stanford Friedman
"Mappings proposes a thoroughly multiculturalist and geopolitical definition of feminism that significantly expands the theoretical boundaries of feminist theory and that underlines the importance of narrative as a meaning- making process.... Friedman casts a wide net, one whose timeliness, thoughtfulness, and engagement should prove inspiring and worthwhile for a large number of readers."--Joseph A. Boone, University of Southern California "Here is a work by a critic-theorist who is already a major voice in the fields of feminist, cultural, and narrative theories. This volume is a rich and thought-provoking contribution to all three areas.... Unlike many other books on the same topics, it will appeal to the general reader, as well as to the specialist. Friedman is never pedantic, but her point of view comes through strong and clear. Her engagingly lucid writing style will certainly make her readable in more than one context."--R. Radhakrishnan, University of Massachusetts In this powerful work, Susan Friedman moves feminist theory out of paralyzing debates about us and them, white and other, first and third world, and victimizers and victims. Throughout, Friedman adapts current cultural theory from global and transnational studies, anthropology, and geography to challenge modes of thought that exaggerate the boundaries of gender, race, ethnicity, sexuality, class, and national origin. The author promotes a transnational and heterogeneous feminism, which, she maintains, can replace the proliferation of feminisms based on difference. She argues for a feminist geopolitical literacy that goes beyond fundamentalist identity politics and absolutist poststructuralist theory, and she continually focuses the reader's attention on those locations where differences are negotiated and transformed. Pervading the book is a concern with narrative: the way stories and cultural narratives serve as a primary mode of thinking about the politically explosive question of identity. Drawing freely on modernist novels, contemporary film, popular fiction, poetry, and mass media, the work features narratives of such writers and filmmakers as Gish Jen, Julie Dash, June Jordon, James Joyce, Gloria Anzaldea, Neil Jordon, Virginia Woolf, Mira Nair, Zora Neale Hurston, E. M. Forster, and Irena Klepfisz. Defending the pioneering role of academic feminists in the knowledge revolution, this work draws on a wide variety of twentieth-century cultural expressions to address theoretical issues in postmodern feminism.
