Summary
For Michael and his family, things seem to have gone from bad to worse-they've just moved into a new house, but it needs a lot of work, and Michael's little sister is very, very ill. As he tries to cope with his family's problems, Michael begins exploring the neighborhood in an effort to take his mind off of things. One day, he decides to check out the creepy and crumbling garage in the backyard, and discovers something truly amazing and out-of-this-world-a creature who calls himself Skellig. Michael can't figure out what the creature is-man, animal, or alien-but soon the two begin to rely on one another. Micheal eventually tells his best friend, Mina, about Skellig's presence, relieving him of the giant secret he's been trying to keep to himself. Michael's family problems worsen, but something magical happens-could it be Skellig? A Publisher's Weekly Best Book of 1999.

Cassie Binegar
by Patricia MacLachlan
Cassie thought longingly of the order and pattern in her mother's old garden inland. And her old tree house, built on the low limbs of a huge maple tree. It had been her space. Here there was no space for her. Even her own room was not hers. Cassie Binegar (whose name rhymes with vinegar) hates the weathered house by the sea, where there is no space to call her own. She yearns to go back to her old home, back to the time before she had yelled at her grandfather, before he had died. She tongs for an orderliness to life -- a pattern-that doesn't exist among her raucous, loving family. Cassie hides and watches and listens; but then her Gran comes-Gran, who is so good at seeing the truth about Cassie. The rest of Cassie's relatives arrive also: Uncle Hat, who sometimes speaks in rhymes, Cousin Coralinda, who wears too many feathers, and Baby Binnie, who speaks a language all her own. When a stranger comes for the summer, Cassie begins to learn that there are some things that do not stay the same forever. Patricia MacLachlan, with the gentle insight and understatement that characterizes all her stories, writes of a wistful young girl trying to look at the world through the eyes of those she loves.

Almond, David
New York: Laurel Leaf, 2001. Mass Market Paperback. Slight crease on spine, small tear at bottom. Interiors are tight and clean. A great reading copy. A beautiful, haunting work about mortality, art, and growing up. A mysterious derelict is squatting in young Michael's garage and only his William Blak-quolting neighbor can help him find answers to the man's origins. Almond is a brilliant writer who explores the border of Adolescence and Adulthood with an eye that is uncanny. Highly recommended for fans of "His Dark Materials" by Philip Pullman.
