Summary

Best-selling author Bryce Proctorr is suffering from a serious case of writer's block. Fellow writer Wayne Prentice can't seem to give away his many well-thought out but unpopular novels. When Bryce offers Wayne half of his million-plus advance if he can put his celebrity name on Wayne's next novel, Wayne feels he has stumbled upon the deal of a lifetime. Things take a deadly turn, however, when Bryce finally comes up with the catch: Wayne must kill Bryce's distracting wife, Lucie. After much deliberation-and consultation with his own wife, Susan-Wayne decides to take Bryce up on his offer. Following Lucie's violent death, Wayne and Bryce reap the benefits of their betrayal-for a while. Soon, however, Bryce begins to lose himself in his obsession over Lucie's murder and is once again at a loss for words. Calling on Wayne to make another deal, one can only guess what the hook will be this time.

Media Reviews

"You'll want to turn the pages fast to keep up with the narrative hook, and when you get to the end, you'll find that it turns out to be just as sudden and deft as the beginning."    -- Eugen Weber

   -- Los Angeles Times

"Donald E. Westlake's new mystery is more than high concept; it is pretty much all concept, and its premise-that two authors might be crazy enough to commit murder for the sake of a book deal-may appeal to anyone who follows publishing. In the current conglomerate-induced state of paranoia, murderous thoughts are common."    -- Valerie Sayers

-- New York Times Book Review

"Who knew novelists could be so nasty? Sure, every once in a while, the leading lights of the literary world will engage in a public cat fight. But if the estimable Donald E. Westlake is to be believed, these same wordsmiths are capable of murder most foul as well."    -- Gary Dretzka

   -- Chicago Tribune Books

Nothing but the Night
by Bill Pronzini

For some people, the darkness is comforting, giving them time to think and plan; for others, it's where nightmares hide. Nick Hendryx rides the night, comfortable and in control, searching for the man who lost control of his car and slammed Annalisa Hendryx into a coma. Can Gallagher fears the night and the memories it brings, the sounds and images of the anger and death that followed it in his home along the banks of California's Russian River. The lives of Gallagher and Hendryx have taken separate courses; their roads will cross and cross again, with increasing threat, in the nights they begin to share.

Instruments of Night
by Thomas H. Cook

On a humid summer evening in 1963, following a hard days work in the field, twelve-year-old Paul Graves came home to a nightmare. Snatched by a stranger, strapped to a chair in a sweltering farmhouse, he watched in horror as the man orchestrated the slow, deliberate, night-long brutalization and murder of his older sister....Now, more than thirty years later, Graves is a marginally successful writer who has lost himself in the anonymity of Manhattan and in the mind-numbing world of his crime fiction. But still held captive by his memories, still haunted by this sisters agonized whispers, he writes chilling tales of cruelty and sadism, of evil triumphing over good. Stories so convincing, they have earned him an invitation to the Riverwood Estate. But not to practice his craft as a writer. Alison Davies, who runs the retreat, is convinced hes the one man capable of bringing closure to the mystery that has haunted her own family, asking him to investigate the fifty-year-old unsolved murder of 16-year-old Faye Harrision, Alison's best friend, who was tortured, strangled, and left to molder in the dark confines of a cave.Graves, more than anyone, knows where to look for the truth, where the instruments of night are brought to bear: In the deep basements, the dark caves, the lonely farmhouses where cowardice bows before corruption, where love cannot withstand the intimidation and pain. Compelled to peer into the chaos of twisted motives and tainted passions, he will confront the ultimate atrocity. Not about who killed Faye Harrison, or who killed his sister. Not about what he has witnessed and could never reveal. But about what he is capable of...and what he has done.
