Selenas Secrets
by Maria Celeste Arraras

There is no doubt that Yolanda Saldivar pulled the trigger and killed the beloved Tejano superstar Selena Quintanilla Perez. But does any of us know what really happened in Room 158 of the Days Inn, moments before Yolanda fired the gun that took Selena's life? Maria Celeste Arraras has many answers - and her unrivaled coverage of the murder, the trial, and the aftermath for Univision's Primer Impacto have made her the undisputed expert on the Selena case. Now Arraras shares first-hand details and facts about the crime and the people involved - including never-before-published details of her headline-making jailhouse interview with Yolanda, who repeatedly spoke of "Selena's secret" - a powerful hidden piece of information that she refused to divulge in the courtroom but revealed to Arraras at length. Many questions were raised - and not all were answered until now. Why was there a suitcase filled with Selena's clothes at the murder scene? What was the significance of the jeweled ring, adorned with the initial "S", that fell from Selena's bloody fist? Who was the doctor from Monterrey who called himself Selena's confidant and business advisor? And what will become of Selena's secret diary that Yolanda claims to possess? Filled with original reporting, Selena's Secret fits together the pieces of this puzzle so that, finally, a clear picture of what really happened on that rainy day in March emerges. It's also an intimate portrait of the lives of those people who were most affected by Selena's murder.

The Union Station Massacre
by Robert Unger

Robert Unger delves into the FBI's own files regarding the 1933 massacre of four lawmen in Kansas City's Union Station parking lot. Unger reveals that the case that catapulted J. Edgar Hoover's FBI into national prominence was far less the Bureau's proud birth than its original sin. Tearing away 64 years of secrets and legends, Unger gives us the real story.

1) THE SEARCH FOR LOPEZ - Utah's Greatest Manhunt
Bailey, Lynn R

1990, new copy, hard bound in dust jacket, 6 x 8 1/2, 165 pages, ell illustrated, notes, bibliog, index., appendice. Utahns barely blinked at the story that appeared on page three of the November 21, 1913, Salt Lake City Tribune, detailing the murder of Juan Valdez by Ralph Lopez at Highland Boy in the Bingham Mining District. Such occurrences were common in mining towns. Public consciousness, however, was jolted the next day with the banner: "Bingham Mexican Kills Three Officers." Similar head-lines trumpeted the news from front pages of other Utah daily newspapers. Lawmen from four counties assembled to run down the perpetrator of this outrageous act. Lightly clad and afoot in freezing weather, Ralph Lopez was thought to be no match for experienced trackers and lawmen mustering against him. The manhunt was en-visioned to be of short duration . Ralph Lopez had the stamina of a grizzly bear and the cunning of a wolf, and was determined to sell his life as dearly as possible. Suffering from frostbite, the desperado for five days led nearly 200 pursuers on a circular chase along the shore of Utah Lake and through the Lake Mountains. Al-though shots were exchanged with the fugitive, lawmen could not pin him down. Lopez kept on the move, his strength and endurance unmatched. Even lawmen marveled at the wily gunman—a degree of admiration crept into public disdain for the "Mexican." Ralph Lopez became Rafael Lopez, the "Limping Desperado, Always Ahead of Pursuers." What started as a simple chase fast developed into one of the West's greatest manhunts; all Utah followed the drama. The trackdown, how-ever, took a curious twist. Rafael backtracked to Bingham and took refuge in a mine, the workings of which he knew better than anyone. The manhunt, the only one on record to take place within a mine, could not be con-ducted by orthodox means. Lawmen racked their brains as to how to extract the gunman—none wanted to face a dead-shot killer on his own turf. Fumigation was the attempted solution. Levels and tunnels were sealed, bales of hay, tons of coal, sulphur, and all sorts of foul-smelling things were carted into the mine. Fires were lighted, smoke poured through the workings. Two more men paid with their lives when they attempted to place combustibles in the stope where Rafael was hiding . When fumigation failed, starvation was tried. Tunnels and drifts were bulkheaded with timbers and guards placed at the portals. Lopez was sealed within the mine to starve slowly to death.. For a month Utah and the nation followed the drama. Rafael did not die like a "rat in a trap," however. When the mine was opened early in January 1914, the gunman was gone. Although there were re-ports of him from various parts of the United States, Lopez was never apprehended. He had fought a desperate battle against overwhelming odds and won; in so doing he created one of the West's greatest mysteries—what happened to Rafael Lopez? This study, the outgrowth of a previous history of Bingham Canyon, Utah, is according to Mr. Bailey an unfinished book. It will remain so until that person — perhaps a relative of Rafael Lopez — steps forth to reveal the gunman's later life. This is Lynn Bailey's ninth book on topics of western history. .
