Poet Be Like God
by Kevin Killian

Jack Spicer, unlike his contemporaries Allen Ginsberg, Jack Kerouac, and Gary Snyder, was a poet who disdained publishing and relished his role as a social outcast. He died in 1965 virtually unrecognized, yet in the following years his work and thought have attracted and intrigued an international audience. Now this comprehensive biography gives a pivotal poet his due. Based on interviews with scores of Spicer's contemporaries, Poet Be Like God details the most intimate aspects of Spicer's life - his family, his friends, his lover - illuminating not only the man but also many of his poems. The resultant narrative of the San Francisco Renaissance and the emergence of the North Beach gay scene during the 50s and 60s will be indispensable reading for students of American literature and gay studies.

Isak Dinesen
by Judith Thurman

With exceptional grace, Judith Thurman's classic work explores Dinesen's life--her privileged childhood in Denmark, her marriage to Baron Blixen and their immigration to Africa on the eve of the First World War, her passionate affair with Denys Finch Hatton. This biography was one of the sources for the film "Out of Africa."

George Orwell
by Peter Davison

This account of Orwell's life focuses on what influenced Orwell, his relations with publishers and editors, and on certain key experiences in his life: the deposition that, while fighting in the Spanish Civil War, he was guilty of espionage and high treason; his work at the BBC, especially in developing 'cultural propaganda' and as the forerunner of the Open University; his interest in pamphlet literature; his time as a war correspondent; and his activities during the Cold War. A detailed analysis of his earnings between 1922 to 1945 reveals how very poor he was and challenges the widely-held, but unsustainable belief that he was paid a large sum to investigate conditions in Wigam.

Confessions of a Failed Southern Lady
by Florence King

Florence King's hilarious memoir of being reared in an eccentric Southern family by a grande dame grandmother who tried to hammer her into the shape of a true Southern lady. Was Granny successful? That is for the readers to decide, but they'll laugh uproariously as they do.

4) B. Traven: The Life Behind the Legends
Guthke, Karl S

Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.: Lawrence Hill & Co, 1991 Book is in very clean and tight condition with a couple of creases to covers. REVIEW FROM LIBRARY JOURNAL: With complete access to archives and Freedom of Information Act reports, this is the first biography of the superreclusive Traven to approach definitiveness. Best known for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, Traven was a self-created persona for a man who had at least three identities. Guthke sifts through documented facts and bizarre myths to construct a possible life history for a man who may have been a German anarchist or an American wanderer, whose true story was not even known to his wife. Source notes are included. Although exhaustively researched, this book is not well argued, and Guthke draws few final conclusions from his data. Still, this is essential for modern literature collections.-- Shelley Cox, South Illinois Univ. Lib., Carbondale . First Paperback Edition. Trade Paperback. Good/No Jacket.
