I've always been fascinated by the Beats, the Surrealists, and those artists obviously troubled by addiction, overindulgence and the trippy situations incurred by living on or beyond the edge of normalcy. Certainly Bukowski qualifies in spades on several counts. Martinelli was a contemporary of Bukowski, and artist and an obvious soul mate and confidant. The letters contained in this new book are at times highly personal and intimate and at times very frivolous and businesslike. It's my contention that one can learn a great deal about an artist and their work by reading correspondence, especially when that correspondence is directed at a person of the opposite sex and with whom the writer has a great affection. These letters are revealing and funny and . . . very interesting. Art and addiction. Love and self-loathing, beerspit and cursing. What good fun.
