European Culture in the Great War: The Arts, Entertainment and Propaganda, 1914-1918 Hardcover - 1999

From the publisher

The First World War is commonly referred to as an historical watershed, and the nature of that great cataclysm's impact upon European society and culture remains a hotly debated topic. This book is a comparative study, with a broad coverage, enhanced by its interactive treatment of high culture, popular culture, and propaganda.

First line

The wartime culture of Russia has until recently been little studied for several reasons: the Soviet historiographical enmity towards most of those engaged in it; the near exclusion from literary and art history of things that smell of propaganda or popular culture; and - most important - the absence of a real historical memory of that war in Russia, a memory that was buried beneath the remembrance of the revolutions of 1917 and the civil war that followed.
