The book opens with a general introduction, covering the development of prototype XBT1 and the production BT-1 a/c ; aircraft on strength by month from 1935 through 1944 and basic technical data. Then follow the units - the initial first-line pre-Pearl-Harbor deployments by VB-5 (USS Yorktown) & VB-6 (USS Enterprise) and subsequent stateside usage as trainers & hacks, well into WW2. The author draws attention to an inherent defect of the design - an abbreviated wingspan which often led to fatal stalls when flying at low-speed. (In retrospect perhaps not as poignant as the fates of other contemporary dive-bombers ; Skuas, Vought 156s, LN 501s, its immediate predecessor the Northrop 17, or eventually Ju87s which would all display more serious shortcomings when flown belligerently.)
