NORTHROP BT-1 (Allied Wings) Paperback - 2008

by Phil Listemann

From the publisher

The BT-1 belongs to the category of warplanes which just missed, in this case by a couple of weeks, having an operational role in WW2 and has for all practical purposes been forgotten. Nevertheless its importance was probably higher than is currently recognised for at least two reasons. Designed by Ed Heinemann the BT-1 was sufficiently successful to allow him to go on to design such aircraft as the Boston/Havoc, Invader and Skyhawk, some of America's most famous aircraft. Despite its shortcomings, including a deadly spin, the BT-1 led the way to its successor, the SBD Dauntless, which wrote itself into the pages of the USN's history during the desperate, and decisive, battles of 1942 and 1943 which took place in the Pacific. Forty photographs, 11 colour profiles. REVISED EDITION.

Description:
France: Philedition, 2008. New book, 50 pages. The book opens with a general introduction, covering the development of prototype XBT1 and the production BT-1 a/c ; aircraft on strength by month from 1935 through 1944 and basic technical data. Then follow the units - the initial first-line pre-Pearl-Harbor deployments by VB-5 (USS Yorktown) & VB-6 (USS Enterprise) and subsequent stateside usage as trainers & hacks, well into WW2. The author draws attention to an inherent defect of the design - an abbreviated wingspan which often led to fatal stalls when flying at low-speed. (In retrospect perhaps not as poignant as the fates of other contemporary dive-bombers ; Skuas, Vought 156’s, LN 501’s, its immediate predecessor the Northrop 17, or eventually Ju87s which would all display more serious shortcomings when flown belligerently.) The various second-line units with their locations which flew the steadily diminishing numbers of BT-1s after withdrawal from service with VB-5 & VB-6 are… Read More
