The Lord Paperback - 1996

by Romano Guardini; Introduction by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger

"This book is a masterpiece. It embodies the wealth of modern exegetical criticism opened by Protestant theologians like Karl Barth; the great traditions of 'devotio moderna'; French 17th century thought; the great insights of the Catholic mystics; and the matured speculation of scholasticism. But above all, it is an approach to Christ through the Gospels".--Commonwealth.

From the publisher

The only true and unedited telling of the life of Christ--his life and times, in historical context, but not lacking the psychology behind his physical being and spirit. Unlike other books seeking to strip Jesus' story to reveal only the human being, Romano Guardini's The Lord gives the complete story of Jesus Christ--as man, Holy Ghost, and Creator. Pope Benedict XVI lauds Guardini's work as providing a full understanding of the Son of God, away from the prejudice that rationality engenders. Put long-held myths aside and discover the entire truth about God's only begotten Son.

First line

If someone in Capharnaum or Jerusalem at the time had asked the Lord: Who are you?

--H.A. Reinhold, Commonweal "Guardini's book The Lord has not grown old, precisely because it still leads us to that which is essential, to that which is truly real, Jesus Christ Himself. That is why today this book still has a great mission."
--Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI

About the author

Romano Guardini (1885-1968) was born in Italy but came as a small child to Germany, where he lived the rest of his life. His sermons and writings won him worldwide acclaim, and his admirers included Josef Pieper and Pope Benedict XVI. His many books have influenced generations and include The Lord, The End of the Modern World, The Spirit of the Liturgy, and The World and the Person. Guardini was the recipient of the German publishing industry's Peace Prize in 1952 and the Erasmus Prize in 1962. The Archdiocese of Munich and Freising opened the Cause for Canonization for Guardini in 2017. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (1927-2022) was a Catholic priest and professor from Bavaria who became Pope Benedict XVI. He was a student of Romano Guardini and confidant of Pope John Paul II, participated in the Second Vatican Council, and would serve as Archbishop of Munich and Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith before his election to the papacy in 2005.

Description:
Gateway Editions, January 1982. Paper Back. Very Good. This brilliant work, a series of theological and devotional meditations on the life and ministry of Christ as related in the Gospels, is as relevant now as when first published in 1954. Guardini constantly relates Christ's words and actions to our peculiarly modern doubts and dilemmas, and never falls prey to the sentimental or romantic piety of some of the older Lives of Christ, whether of Protestant or Catholic origin. He speaks a radical word into our current variations on the Jesus of history vs.Christ of faith debate: ''There is only one true Jesus Christ: the God-man of full uncrippled Christian belief. And faith is as essential to our understanding of him as the eye is to color and the ear to sound. From the start Jesus demanded of all would-be followers...affirmation or rejection, not a little of each... Once we meet him the only way he can be met, in faith; once we renounce all personal judgment, letting Scripture speak with… Read More
