From the publisher

"Ward Churchill writes with the authentic voice of struggle. With clear scholarship, precise prose and indisputable argument, he relentlessly exposes the reality behind the myth that is America". -- Jim Page

U.S. policy with regard to Hawai'i has for more than a century embodied the gravest sorts of violation of the laws of nations. So concluded an international tribunal in August 1993 in Hawai'i, a state that has become a playground for the super rich. The tribunal reviewed extensive documentary evidence, listened to hundreds of hours of oral testimony, and engaged in site inspection on five major islands, before making their historic and remarkable assessment.

In Islands in Captivity, rapporteur Ward Churchill brings together the first comprehensive summary of the tribunal's evidence. Beginning with the original Statement of Charges brought by the Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) Nation against the federal and state governments, the book also includes a full rendering of the tribunal's findings and recommendations.

Volume One presents written essays submitted during the international tribunal by indigenous scholars such as Haunani-Kay Trask, John Osario, and Lilikala Kame'eleihiwa as well as non-indigenous experts such as Steven Boggy and Marion Kelley.Volume Two provides extensive excerpts from the testimonies of grassroots Hawaiians including Miliani Trask, Barry Nakamura, Florence Lani, Janet Redo, and Sharon Pomroy.
