A modern classic that no child should miss. Since it was first published in 1939, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel has delighted generations of children. Mike and his trusty steam shovel, Mary Anne, dig deep canals for boats to travel through, cut mountain passes for trains, and hollow out cellars for city skyscrapers -- the very symbol of industrial America. But with progress come new machines, and soon the inseparable duo are out of work. Mike believes that Mary Anne can dig as much in a day as one hundred men can dig in a week, and the two have one last chance to prove it and save Mary Anne from the scrap heap. What happens next in the small town of Popperville is a testament to their friendship, and to old-fashioned hard work and ingenuity.

Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1939. First edition of this children's classic with the date of 1939 on the copyright page. Oblong quarto, original tan cloth. Signed "greetings from Virginia Lee Burton" on the half title page. An excellent near fine copy in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Most desirable signed by the author. Taking her cue from her small sons, Aristides and Michael, Burton chose subjects that would intrigue children... Mary Ann, the steam shovel… (Burton's books) have heroes and heroines children can understand and enjoy, ingenious and satisfactory endings and lively illustrations. The books survive because they exhibit so effectively the elements most basic to children's literature" (Silvey, 109-10).

BURTON VIRGINIA LEE MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL BOSTON HOUGHTON. BURTON, VIRGINIA LEE. BURTON,VIRGINIA LEE. MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL. Boston: Houghton Mifflin 1939 (1939). Oblong 4to (9 1/2 x 8 1/2"), pictorial cloth, a few tiny margin mends and hinge wear else near fine in an amazingly bright price clipped dust wrapper with only a few tiny closed edge tears and 1/4" chip off top of spine. First edition, first printing of this classic, illustrated with rich colors by the author to accompany the wonderful story of an Irish steam shovel operator and his beloved steam shovel Mary Anne. Burton, along with Sendak and McCloskey is among the handful of author/illustrators of picture books whose talents were equally accomplished in both aspects of creating a successful children's book. Bader (p.199-201) says that "Burton knew exactly what she wanted in a picture book, hers or another's, and she wanted a good deal - information and significant detail as well as the accostomed clarity, humor and imagination. The wonder is that she achieved what she wanted without losing the spontaneity..." The result is that her books were read to tatters so very few collectible 1st editions of this title exist. This is a nice copy.
