1659 1ed George Fox FAMOUS Primer for Scholars Mathematics Quaker PhilosophyGeorge Fox, the founder of the Quakers, was known for his missionary travels and journal writings describing his life and ministry. However, he wrote an interesting primer which, on the surface, was intended for 'scholars and doctors'. Though, this work "Primer for the Schollers and Doctors of Europe", has often been considered one of the best children's books in England, according to Harvey Darton. This book offers elementary descriptions of subjects such as grammar, music, arithmetic, ethics, theology, and medicine.

London: Printed for the Author; and sold by L. Hawes…[et al.], 1764 First edition. Recent tan calf over marbled boards, Gilt-ruled spine with crimson morocco label. . Quarto. Five engraved folding plates. With list of subscribers. A little light foxing. A very good copy of a scarce book. John Landen (1719-1790) was the most notable British mathematician in the second half of the eighteenth century. At the time when British mathematics was held back by inadequate notation, an unfortunate consequence of the Newton-Leibniz dispute, he was the only Englishman to score major advances in mathematics and in the art of computation. In this, his most important work, he attempted to replace the fluxional calculus with an analytic method "founded entirely on the anciently received principles of algebra." A second volume was planned, but it never appeared. According to Lacroix, this was the first attempt to reduce the infinitesimal calculus to "purely mathematical notions" (Oxford DNB). Landen's writings…

Hardcover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. 170 page manuscript. Contemporary half speckled sheep, marbled sides. Several contemporary sheets of manuscript with mathematical notations loosely inserted. Corners repaired, a little wear and some discolouration to boards, endpapers tanned, contents with the occasional light spot but overall quite clean. Very good condition. An elegant, substantial early-19th century manuscript containing practical mathematical and astronomical problems likely produced by a student of navigation. The majority of the text is from John Bonnycastle''s A Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, originally published in 1806. Bonnycastle was a respected mathematics teacher who tutored the children of the aristocracy and taught at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. A man of "considerable classical and general literary culture", he was a great friend of Fuseli and also of Leigh Hunt, who included Bonnycastle in his book Lord Byron and Some of His Contemporaries.…

Description:
1605 1ed Fiammelli La Riga Matematica Military Engineering Civil MathematicsGiovanni Fiammelli was a 16th-century Italian engineer who focused on mathematics as the foundation for his research and planning. While little is known of his life, he published one of the most important mathematics treatises in 'La Riga Matematica'. In this book, Fiammelli discusses his theories on trigonometry and the use of math in military and civil engineering. Fiammelli explains his techniques in using mat to determine water depths, measure long distances, and give context to architectural planning.
This 1605 first edition is highly rare and highly valuable! It contains desirable in-text geometric figures.

[8],+320 pages. Small quarto (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in contemporary vellum with title in script on spine. (Medina BHA 5346; Palau 214290; Sabin 58993) First edition.Fray Antonio Raimundo Pascual was a Majorcan Cistercian brother. He wrote at least six works that were published in his lifetime, four of which dealt with Llull.Treatise seeking to show that the medieval Catalan thinker Ramón Lull (or Llull; 1232?-1316), a native of Palma, Majorca, had discovered the use of the magnetic compass in navigation, and that Lull's theories regarding the existence of a Western continent influenced Columbus. Llull's Art (in Latin Ars) is at the center of his thought and undergirds his entire corpus. It is a system of universal logic based on a set of general principles activated in a combinatorial process. It can be used to prove statements about God and Creation (e.g., God is a Trinity). Often the Art formulates these statements as questions and answers (e.g., Q: Is there a Trinity in God? A: Yes.). It works…

Discounted for final fair hours!San Jose, CA: Billiken Press, 1971. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
