New York: Slote, Woodman & Co., 1878. 140pp + 2pp ads. Or cobalt blue cloth ornately decorated in blind stamped black with title in gilt to spine. Slightly rubbed at corners, slight shelf wear at head and foot of spine, small marks to front board, ink stain on rear board, small piece of blue paper stuck to bottom left of title page, previous owners gift inscription dated July 15, 1878. Meets first issue points as per Blanck's Bibliography of American Literature (1957; Vol 2, p191, #3378). Blue cloth with blue endpapers, terminal pastedown with picture of Mark Twain's Scrap Book measuring 2" x 2 7/8". Author's name on title page in Roman type (later issues had facsimilie signature). On 4th line from bottom on page 91 reads "health offi..... could " where later issues have "health officer's funeral could". Page 101 has a total of 13 lines of text. The blue cloth is given as primary issue, with other colours secondary. An very nice bright copy of this scarce lesser known Twain title.. First Editon, First State.. Hard Cover. Near Fine. 12mo.

Spine has light wear, with quarter-inch chip and one-inch tear on lower spine, light wear and creasing to wrappers, else a near fine copy; fragile binding, difficult to find in nice condition. . Eighteenmo, red coated pictorial wrappers, 140 pages [followed by four pages of ads. A bibliographically important issue, as the rear cover prints the text of a long letter by Mark Twain about his patent scrap book which does not appear in the first issue binding.

In black stamped green cloth, gilt stamped spine with first state, undecorated cream end-papers; second state scrap book illustration measuring 3"x5" on rear paste down. BAL 3378. Almost Near Fine condition, spine ends slightly rubbed; Punch, brothers, punch with care! Punch in the presence of the passenjare!.Contains the first use of the telephone in a work of fiction in "The Loves of Alonzo Fitz Clarence, etc." .

Spine, front hinge, and rear board scuffed; spine tips and corners lightly bumped and frayed; some faint browning here and there throughout text block, but overall clean and unmarked.

It is mildly rubbed at the edges with slightly corners. The front board and front end papers are separated. It has green marbled end papers and 140, clear, very lightly toned pages in a three-quarter binding with tan leather at the corners and spine.
