Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph
by Arbus, Diane
Aperture, 1972. Hardback lacking dj. First edition, first printing. Good with wear and soiling to covers, light bumps to tips and edges, gift inscription and pen mark to first two pages, dog ears to the first four pages, creases to the last page, general handling wear through out and rub-off to many pages opposite the plates. 184 pages; 80 b&w full-page photographic plates; 9.5 x 11 inches. When Diane Arbus committed suicide in 1971, only a relatively small number of her most important pictures were widely known. The publication of Diane Arbus: An Aperture Monograph in 1972--along with the concurrent retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art--offered the general public its first encounter with the breadth and power of her work. Now considered a classic of photographic literature, it is probably the best selling photography book of all time. This copy is the first printing with the plate titled "Two Girls in Identical Raincoats, Central Park, N.Y.C, 1969" which was supressed in subsequent printings. Nudes. Parr & Badger, The Photobook, Vol. 1, pg 258; Roth, Book of 101 Books, pg 214; The Open Book, pg 284. FREE SHIPPING, insurance and tracking within the US by Priority Mail. Careful and secure packaging.

Description:
Routledge, 1990. 8vo size trade paperback; 390 pages including index From back: "This is a unique study, continuing the work of Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, and using the techniques of phenomenology against the prevailing nihilism of our culture. It expands our understanding of the human potential for spiritual self-realization by interpreting it as the developing of a bodily-felt awareness informing our gestures and movements. The author argues that a psychological focus on our experiences of well-being and pathology as embodied beings contribute significantly to a historically relevant critique of idealogy. It also provides an essential touchstone in experience for a fruitful individual and collective response to the dangers of nihilism." Edgewear, moderate wear to covers with sunned spine; marginalia, underlining and very light highlighting on least 58 pages prior to page 107; two previously folded page corners, some stray ink marks on outside pages.
