Oxford: Printed at The University Press by John Collingwood & Co 1841 4to unpaginated, 1841 VG+ to Near Fine copy of the large 4to edition, bound in original full burgundy leather, with intricate gilt tooling to front & rear covers & spine, raised bands, all edges gilt. There is slight rubbing to the covers, and the edges are somewhat scuffed, otherwise the binding is in excellent condition. The bookplate of Edgar & Helen Corrie, dated 27th Nov. 1843, is affixed to the front pastedown, and is very attractive in its own right, having hand-stamped gilt lettering & intricate gilt border on a purple background. Internally, apart from some very mild foxing to the prelims, the book is Very Fine throughout, printed in large letter double-column, and appears to be completely unread, with the look and lustre of a brand new book. Obviously, this book has been lovingly cared for by its previous owners throughout the past 150 years, and it is now looking for a new loving home.

First edition of this verse translation of the Song of Songs by Joseph Stennett (1663-1713), the first important Baptist hymnwriter in England: "Thy Lips, my Spouse, that move with skill, / Drops like the Hony-comb distil. / Hony and Milk's beneath thy Tongue, / Which feeds the Weak as well as strong." In his scholarly preface, Stennett is quick to assure readers that the Hebrew text is not about sexual desire, despite appearances: "some have denied that [Solomon] wrote it by Divine Inspiration; and make his Design to be only that of celebrating his Amours with Pharoah's Daughter, or some other person." The passion of the bridegroom and the bride is to be understood, however, as a divine allegory of Christ's love for his church, the same "mystical Espousals" found in the 45th Psalm, which Stennett also translates here. The volume is tightly bound with some tearing of the latter vellum and noticeable discoloration. The text and beautiful engravings remain in excellent condition. Half title, Title page, 415pp. One of 500 copies printed, using the fine Baskerville Greek type. A clean and crisp copy in a very good contemporary leather binding of full diced dark brown calf boards, with floral gilt roll borders. Professionally re-spined at a later date with a matching coloured Morocco spine, ruled, decorated and lettered in gilt. Board edges ruled in gilt. Marbled endpapers. Gilt inner dentelles. All edges marbled. A small patch of rubbing to the front free endpaper and some rubbing and bumping to the edges but overall a very good copy of this beautifully printed book in an attractive 18th century binding.

An important Osterwald English Bible from 1797! This charming, pocket-sized Bible comes from the French of Protestant Swiss pastor, Jean Frederic Osterwald who was notable for being highly influential among central European Protestants, so much so that he is often called the leader of a 'second reformation'. He is remembered for his innovative dogmatics, exegeses, liturgies, and hymns, but his most important contribution was his translation of the Bible. His translation was extremely thorough and included aspects many different Bibles, seeking to make the most accurate form of scripture. According to Darlow and Moule,
