It invites contemplations of differences among insects that appear, at first glance, similar. Goodale shows the intricate silhouettes and subtle markings that distinguish Edwards' hairstrea, Clayton's copper, hessel's hairstreak, and Katahdin Arctic. The butterfly forms are cut out and placed on decorative backgrounds inspired by their individual host plants. In the history of art, the butterfly symbolizes resurrection, and Goodale captures this hopeful quality. The insects pop up and hover over the pages, vibrating with life despite their endangered status.

Association Set having previously belonged to Robin Kemp (London, 1871-??) who in 1904 worked with Shelley incorporating his help to classify birds he had gathered in Sierra Leone between 1902 and 1904. Having been sent to Sierra Leone as an accountant with a railway firm, Kemp filled his spare time collecting bird specimens, and soon identified himself as a "Professional Specimen Collector." In addition to two trips to New Zealand, and a later trip to Argentine, Kemp was commissioned by C. D. Rudd to collect in East Africa from 1908-1911. Overall Dimensions: 6 1/2″ x 10 1/4″John Audubon (1785 – 1851), whose surname became synonymous with birds, produced a prolific body of work, including over 435 paintings of birds. America's dominant wildlife artist for half a century, Audubon's childhood fascination with birds extended into his adulthood, and he spent days and weeks on the frontier, amassing an enormous portfolio of life-size bird drawings. Reflecting his deep love of birds and his concern for conservation, the Audubon Society was established in his name in the late 1800s, years after his death. His work remains the standard against which 20th and 21st century bird artists are still measured.

William Matthew Hart (1830-1908) was a bird illustrator and lithographer who worked for John Gould from 1851. He began by making the patterns for the lithographic plates for Gould's monograph on Hummingbirds, as well as working on The Birds of Great Britain with Henry Constantine Richter. By 1870 Hart had become Gould's chief artist and lithographer. Henry Constantine Richter (1821-1902) was an English zoological illustrator who produced a large number of handcoloured lithographs of birds and mammals, mainly for the scientific books of the renowned English 19th century ornithologist John Gould. Gould was fascinated by hummingbirds and exhibited his extensive collection of 100s of these tiny birds in taxidermy cases at the Great Exhibition in London in 1851. The print (51cm x 34cm) is in very good condition, with very slight age toning overall, mounted in a cream-coloured French matt (71cm x 54cm).
