Description:
Philadelphia: King & Baird, 1866. Paperback. Small 4to. Stiff tan wrappers. 14pp. Very good. Bit of soiling to outer wrappers, else tight and nice. Collis, a colonel with the 114th Pennsylvania Infantry, published this collection of documents regarding the character of one Frederick Fernandez Cavada (1832-71) to protest Cavada's appointment as United States Consul at Trinidad de Cuba. Cavada was cashiered for "behav[ing] himself in a cowardly manner in the presence of the enemy, by absenting himself from the battle-field" at Fredericksburg, but was reinstated. Cavada displayed similar cowardice at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, but resigned before he could be tried. Whether the publication of Collis's pamphlet affected Cavada's Consul appointment we have not been able to determine. Most unusual. First edition. DORNBUSCH I, P 275A. SABIN 14457.

Richmond: James E. Goode, 1862. Extra Session.  452 pages + appendices of 31 documents and an index of 44 pages.  There is a bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper for Lee Garnett Day, the grandson of William H. Day, member of the Virginia Senate from Isle of Wight County during the Civil War.  The earlier Day's name is listed in the roster of Senators following page 452 in this Journal.  Note: this is not the Journal for the Wheeling Extra Session (held in what was soon to become West Virginia) that is much more common.  A WorldCat searched turned up only 4 copies of the Richmond Journal; the only one in Virginia is held by The Virginia Historical Society, which also has one complete and one incomplete copy from the Confederate Memorial Literary Society.  I cannot locate any copies (other than mine) on the market at this time.. First Edition. Half-Leather. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.

Description:
[Civil War]. [Reconstruction]. [North Carolina]."The triumphant North demanded three things of the defeated South: acknowledgment of the emancipation of its slaves; contract freedom for all citizens, black and white; and national reunification. Emancipation, freedom, and reunification were still just words. Their meanings remained unfixed. The image of the new country would emerge only as the lines connecting these ideological dots were drawn. As former North Carolina governor David L. Swain recognized, 'With reference to emancipation, we are at the beginning of the War.'" [Richard White. "The Republic For Which It Stands."]OFFICE OF THE PROVOST MARSHALL, NORTH CAROLINA. Description:
1864 CIVIL WAR 1st/1st General Ulysses Grant Campaigns Larke Military Americana

A rare first edition of Julian K. Larke's fascinating historical biography on General Ulysses S. Grant and his military campaigns during the American Civil War. Entitled simply, 'General Grant and His Campaigns,' this work exhaustively details Grant's military career along with the specifics of each of his military campaigns during the ongoing Civil War. Notably, while most historical accounts on this subject were written post-war or even well into Grant's eventual presidency, this title was written during the war.

Per Larke's introduction:
"…the subject of [this book] is but forty-one years of age; has participated in two great wars; has captured during the present struggle five hundred guns, one hundred thousand prisoners, and a quarter of a million of small arms; has redeemed from rebel rule over fifty thousand square miles of territory; has reopened to the commerce of the world the mightiest highway on the… Read More

Description:
Bricks Without Straw, A Novel. By Albion W Tourgee, Author of "A Fool's Errand" etc. New York: Fords, Howard & Hulbert. 1880. Believed to be first edition. 'A classic of American political fiction first published in 1880, a mere three years after Reconstruction officially ended, Bricks Without Straw offers an inside view of the struggle to create a just society in the post-slavery South. It is unique among the white-authored literary works of its time in presenting Reconstruction through the eyes of emancipated slaves. As a leading Radical Republican, the author, Albion W. Tourgée, played a key role in drafting a democratized Constitution for North Carolina after the Civil War, and he served as a state superior court judge during Reconstruction. Tourgée worked closely with African Americans and poor whites in the struggle to transform North Carolina's racial and class politics. He saw the ravages of the Ku Klux Klan firsthand, worked to bring the perpetrators of Klan atrocities to justice, and… Read More
