Description:
1866 1ed Women of the Civil War Americana Gettysburg Military Robert E Lee Moore

Frank Moore was a notable American Civil War historian known for his portrayals of Civil War life and culture. One of his most important works was 'Women of the War'. While this work focuses primarily on the biographical accounts of individual women, Moore also describes the hardships and sacrifices made by American women during the war and provides an interesting account of how these women influenced Gettysburg. Moore covers the lives of the following women, most of whom are wives of Civil War officers:
·
P.B. Hurd
·
Mary Lee
·
Mrs. John Harris
·
Charlotte McKay
·
Burger Stearns
·
Harriet W.F. Hawley
·
And more

According to Nevins,
"idealistic biographies of then-famous women."

Description:
This has to be an extremely rare first edition of this important historical archive. We have not found another edition of this book prior to 1880. The pages are readable and the illustrations in good condition. There is moderate foxing on most of the pages and moderate yellowing on a few of the pages. There is what appears to be light to heavy water stains on many of the pages. There does not appear to be any missing pages or tears on any of the pages . Front page wrinkled engraving of Pres. Lincoln has separated from the binding as has the covers. The cloth over board covers are heavily worn. However, the gold leaf work on the spine and the title on the spine are still visible despite some tears and separation along the spine.. The remaining pages appear to be tightly bound. On the last textual page and the last fly-leaf page there is an upside down stamp of the Southern Book Exchange of Hagerstown, Md. We are still in the process of pricing the book and searching for another existing first… Read More

Louisiana State University Press, 1952. First Edition. Hardcover. Hay, Thomas Robson; Sanger, Donald Bridgman : James Longstreet I - Soldier; II - Politician, Officeholder and Writer. Baton Rouge : Louisiana State University Press, 1952. First edition. "James Murfin's copy." Size is super royal octavo (8vo), 9.5"/24cm H. Lacking dj. Bound in publisher's chocolate brown cloth, gilt lettering and black decoration to spine. Light yellow/vanilla plain endpapers. xii pp prelim material, 460 numbered pages, plus 14 unnumbered sheets (would be counted as 28 pp) glossy b&w white inserts (photos and maps) scattered through text. An interesting approach - two separate biographies by two different authors bound together. The Soldier section takes up three quarters of the book . Each has a separate 'critical essay on authorities' but (thankfully) a single index covers both. Condition notes: At first glance, merely a solid reading copy structurally sound. Lacking dj. Binding solid and square. No notes or… Read More
