Bound in tooled full leather, covers with center panel bordered by intricate, Middle-Eastern gilt cross design; paneled spine with gilt designs and raised bands. Some foxing to endpapers, but text pages are clean and bright, old, amusing bookplate of "ne obliviscaris", beneath a wing-eared boar head, on pastedown, covers scuffed along the edges with a few chips, outer front hinge cracked, but cover remains tight. Library stamp on main title accompanied by a second perforated library stamp near the printer's device. The outer edges to the first few prelims are slightly worn. Pages are generally clean with occasional mild marginal spotting. A small piece is missing from bottom margin of the final leaf. Page 492 is a bit soiled. Bound in brown library buckram; title and shelf number in gilt on the spine; pocket on inside front cover. Hermann Witsius (1636-1708) was a Dutch theologian and a professor of divinity at Franeker (1675), Utrecht (1680), and Leiden (1698). [EB11]. His Aegyptiaca (first printed in 1683) compares the religious rites of the Jews and the Egyptians. Handsomely bound in the original red pebble-grained cloth (imitation leather), with blind-stamped rectangular borders and gilt titles on the front cover and spine. On the cover are gold-stamped images of the sphinx (sphynx) and a pyramid. All gilt stamping is still bright and shiny. Original yellow (silk?) endpapers are a bit speckled but all other pages are creamy white, clean and unmarked with NO foxing. NO owner's name or bookplate. No date of publication (but copyright 1898). Hinges are perfect. Oblong Hardcover. 11" wide by 8" tall. All edges gilt. This souvenir photo-album has 109 leaves, mostly printed on the rectos only (i.e. versos are usually blank). Most of the photos are full-page. John Marsham was a 17th-century English chronologist who is best known for his studies on Egyptian history. He was the first English historian who made antiquities of Egypt comprehensible to British readers. Smit, 3 photogravure reproductions of radiographs, and 7 photogravure illustrations in text. In original green cloth, worn along joints and edges, with 3cm peel along joint near head, yet sound and entire, with some reinforcement. Text and illustrations in excellent shape, free of foxing or other blemishes. Top edge gilt. Old bookplates removed from front endleaves. Old booksellers' notes in pencil on front pastedown. References: Wood, p. 192; Nissen ZBI 110. Most probably only 100 copies were issued of this very rare and important contribution to the mammals of Egypt. Excellent color plates of monkeys, gazelles, and smaller vertebrates.

This rare two-volume set is the first major publication by the father of Egyptology, Jean-François Champollion (1790-1832). Champollion is the man who made the breakthrough discovery which enabled translation of the Egyptian hieroglyphs. There were 30 copies published in 1811, but this edition is the major publication of this work. Printed on laid paper, and bound in full calf. The title's English translation is "Egypt under the Pharaohs, or research on the geography, religion, language, scriptures and history of Egypt before the invasion of Cambyses". These volumes deal with Egyptian geographical divisions, geographical descriptions, boundaries and divisions. Pherotee La Croix's "Universal Relation of Africa" is a famous 17th-century history of Africa. La Croix was a professor of geography in Lyon whose work on Africa became a lasting authority of African geography and history.
