Each letter written to Francis Lawrence Bickley, author of The Adventures of Harlequin which was one of early fine books he illustrated. Each written on his letterhead John Austen. The September letter is not dated by year but from internal evidence points to 1925 when his "Rogues in Porcelain" was issued by Chapman and Hall. Austen writes that he is glad he thinks well of the "Rogues" and I look forward to your criticism of it. [In a case of apparent censorship, he writes:] "A[rthur]. Waugh, publisher of Chapman and Hall, is [desolatest?] because forsooth I have included "The Dove" its evidently the first line he had read it, as he knew well that I was to use it and now he says its indecent and will probably stop sales. I suggest it only increases them. I will certainly tell him to include the Bookman in his list but probably has already done so." 1827. Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. This is a one of a kind original handwritten working manuscript by the famous French chansonnier, Pierre-Jean de Béranger. These chansons are dated 1827 and were subsequently published in his fourth collection of chansons, the one which precipitated his punishment of nine months imprisonment in La Force Prison. In addition, there is one page which seems to be a crossed out chanson that may not have been published. The manuscript is about 32 pages long (with additional blank pages). The chansons are written in Béranger's hand and contain alterations and edits. It is a real, working manuscript. This is really a museum quality piece that would also be the jewel of any private collection. Text in French. Rebound in flexible red leather boards with gold gilt titles. Probaly Venice, 1825. An exquisite suite of watercolours, including a beautiful series of scenes documenting a Venetian commedia dell'arte troupe, by the Italian artist Francesco Novelli. Francesco Novelli (1767-1836), one of the preeminent artists of his generation, lived in Venice where he was best known for his outstanding book illustration. He enjoyed a long and successful career that culminated in the landmark editions of Don Quixote (1819) and Gil Blas (1820). Novelli is also known for illustrating works such as the Fasti Veneziani (1794), hinting at his abiding interest in the theatre and the performing arts. With a workshop situated just a few blocks away from Vuitton's, this catalogue comes from this very early period of Godillot's life before he had revolutionised footwear by differentiating the moulding of the left shoe from the right and become the famous shoemaker who would go on to equip over one hundred thousand French soldiers for The Crimean War. An elegant, substantial early-19th century manuscript containing practical mathematical and astronomical problems likely produced by a student of navigation. The majority of the text is from John Bonnycastle''s A Treatise on Plane and Spherical Trigonometry, originally published in 1806. Bonnycastle was a respected mathematics teacher who tutored the children of the aristocracy and taught at the Royal Military Academy in Woolwich. Original manuscript and typescript material by the famed, and infamous, Cleveland poet is scarce, with only two pieces appearing at auction in the past 50 years.

Collection of famous Serbian manuscripts, artistically reproduced by Svetislav Strala. The luxurious box contains 18 drawings of miniatures, initials and handwritten text. Strala was a painter of Polish descent, born in 1891. The drawings come in a luxurious leather box resembling medieval bindings, late XXc made by famous bookbinder Aleksandar Ćeklić.Strala came to Serbia in 1917 as an Austrian soldier. In Belgrade, he worked for a time as the manager of the modern art collection and restorer at the National Museum. From 1933 he was a drawing teacher at the gymnasium, and from 1941 he taught watercolor at the Technical Faculty. London, 1837. Addressed to an unidentified recipient, this signed letter concerns the appointment of an officer with hearing loss, which the Duke relates to his own experience of deafness. Like many exposed to the sound of artillery fire, the Duke of Wellington suffered from noise-related hearing loss. Subsequently he underwent a botched treatment which resulted in permanent deafness in one ear. This ALS is dated London, 16 April 1837. This was the year that Queen Victoria ascended the throne, and was written when the Duke was in his late 60s. Expected fold marks.
