Boldly signed on half title page by Harry S. Truman (aka "Give 'Em Hell Harry"). Book and Dust Jacket are in beautiful condition. Clean text. Unclipped ($3.00). Protected by Brodart book jacket cover. Truman is one of our great Presidents. In 1959 former President Truman gave a series of lectures and seminars on government at Columbia University. "The book is a transcript of what he had to tell them about the Presidency, the Constitution and demagoguery more poignant and human than Truman's official memoirs" (New York Times). President Truman had a sign on his desk, "The Buck Stops Here."Truman had been vice president for 82 days when President Roosevelt died on April 12, 1945. Truman, presiding over the Senate, as usual, had just adjourned the session for the day and was preparing to have a drink in House Speaker Sam Rayburn's office when he received an urgent message to go immediately to the White House, where Eleanor Roosevelt told him that her husband had died after a massive cerebral… Read More

Book in fine condition with dust jacket in very good condition. Dust jacket on front page fine condition with very minor wrinkles (see picture). Tiny chips at top of jacket on binding and small tear and wrinkle on rear cover not impacting picture of LBJ (see picture). Clean text. Unclipped ($15.00). Protected by Brodart book jacket cover.LBJ noted about this book, "I make no pretense of having written a complete and definitive history of my Presidency. I have tried, rather, to review that period from a President's personal and political philosophy, a President's experience and knowledge, a President's aspirations, and a President's response to the demands that were made on him." I have not written these chapters to say' This is how it was," but to say, "This is how I saw it from my vantage point."

Powell and Carter's chief of staff Hamilton Jordan appeared in 1977 as caricatures on the cover of Time in 1977 and were pictured on the cover of Rolling Stone Magazine, where they were dubbed Carter's "whiz kids". Powell served as White House press secretary for Carter's entire term as president.

Description:
Stockholm: Svensk Filma, 1987. No Binding. Fine. A quite sensational item of movie memorabilia! A cinema poster or flyer for the 1980's re-screening in Stockholm, Sweden, of Ingmar Bergman's 1949 movie "Törst" (The Thirst). The poster has been inscribed, signed and dated by Ingmar Bergman. Professionally framed by the original recipient and is under glass. The actual poster or flyer is presumably a reproduction of the original poster for the re-screening event. The frame measures approximately 16" x 12.25" and the poster will, thus, be very slightly smaller. To the verso of the frame there is a printed sticker from the framers stating (in Swedish) - "The artwork is insulated with cardboard. 100% cotton" (Google translate). I interpret this to mean that it is cotton-backed. The inscription is located below the final titles and is in blue ink. It reads, "Till TAPANI, MED HJÄRTLIG HÄLSNING OCH TACK FRÄN INGMAR BERGMAN, 10.3.87" (To… Read More

Description:
Stockholm: Norstedts, 1996. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. The original Swedish edition of the book published in English as "Private Confessions". Inscribed, signed and dated by Ingmar Bergman at the front endpaper. Inscription reads (in Swedish), "To (name), with heartfelt greetings from "Ingmar Bergman 19.3.99". Close to the inscription the previous owner/recipient of the book has fixed what looks to be a commemorative Swedish postage stamp featuring an image of Bergman. On the same page there are very faint residue marks suggesting a photgraph or newspaper- clipping, perhaps, was once there. Bumped at both spine ends but otherwise both the book and the dustjacket are in excellent, clean, condition.

This book, based on the Tanner lectures on Human Values that Justice Stephen Breyer delivered at Harvard University in November 2004, defines the term active liberty as a sharing of the nations sovereign authority with its citizens. Regarding the Constitution as a guide for the application of basic American principles to a living and changing society rather than as an arsenal of rigid legal means for binding and restricting it, Justice Breyer argues that the genius of the Constitution rests not in any static meaning it might have had in a world that is dead and gone, but in the adaptability of its great principles to cope with current problems.
