[first 1867]. 19th century travel guide penned by a manager of the Kittatinny House resort hotel, during its heyday. It was under L.W. Brodhead's care that the resort expanded to accommodate 250 guests from the original 25. At the time of publishing, there were about a half dozen resort hotels to which the affluent from New York and Philadelphia could retreat for the season.

This is a scarce, early copy of "Taintor's Route and City Guides" - this particular issue is for the "NORWICH LINE - New York to Boston and the White Mountains, Via New London, Norwich, Worcester, Lake Winnipiseogee (now "Winnipesaukee"), Plymouth, or Littleton." Published in 1868 by Taintor Brothers in New York. With attached large (8-panel) fold-out "Map of The Route to the White Mountains" in color. The guide contains illustrated advertisements at both the front and back. The guide includes "descriptive sketches of the cities, villages, stations, and scenes and objects of interest along the route."Condition:Stain spots to the covers (the stain at the top-left corner of the back cover also has a hole through it); the back cover has some light pencil writing; paper cover missing from the top and bottom edges of the spine; the front cover has a 1.5" tear at the bottom near spine. Octavo, paper boards, 22 x 15 cm, [viii], 132 pages; backstrip chipped, paper toned and a little brittle, with torn title page and occasional chipping, decent condition overall. Half-tone photos throughout.A very evocative guide book to "Jewish excursions" in Frankfurt and Hessen, dedicated to "My wife, Bertha Lilienthal, née Fuchs. My hiking companion on rocky roads." The preface is dated almost exactly a year before Kristallnacht. The author was the chief cantor at the main synagogue in Wiesbaden. He and his wife fled to Amsterdam in June 1939. He was transported to Theresienstadt in 1943 and murdered in October 1944. His wife's exact fate is unknown.

Original publishers paper wraps, printed in gold, both front - which is illustrated, and rear, are bound in. Attractive early leather binding of full red pebble grained morocco. Gilt ruled and dotted line, with floral devices, design to both boards and spine. Front board lettered in gilt. Board edges with gilt dots. Marbled endpapers. Eight line poetic inscription to the front blank free endpaper. Faded light purple ex library stamp to the title page and the leaf with the inscription. Overall a very good and attractively bound copy of this uncommon little book. Copac shows just 3 copies of this 1858 edition, and one of those listed as only having 10 of the plates.
