New York: Doubleday, 1964. pp 381.""The biography opens with a brief sketch of Father DeSmet's early years and then moves into the real story when Father DeSmet embarked in 1847 on the first of his many journeys. During the next three decades Father DeSmet penetrated uncharted territories stretching from the Mississippi to the Pacific Coast. He criss-crossed these vast unknown areas repeatedly, bringing Christianity to the natives, establishing churches, missions and schools, and winning the friendship of the Indians wherever he went. There was rarely a peace conference called between white and red men at which Father DeSmet did not negotiate on behalf of the Indians. He knew of the gold fields in the Black Hills and Montana twenty years before they were actually discovered, deliverately keeping this a secret in the hope that the Indian territory would not be overrun.". Signed and Dedicated by Author. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 8vo.
