The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.

Baum, L. Frank; Illustrated by W.W. Denslow

  • Quantity available: 1
Chicago & New York:: George M. Hill & Company, 1900. First edition, first issue with all points present and red unserifed spine imprint. Original pale green cloth stamped in green and red. Twentyfour color plates and illustrations throughout by W.W. Denslow. A very good example with some wear to foot of the spine, covers lightly soiled. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. The printing history of the George Hill edition has been hotly debated for years. Jacob Blanck in Peter Parley to Penrod (1938) identified three printings of the first edition: States X, Y and Z. The major distinction between the three states was the copyright page. (The "Y" state may have been merely a mixed copy.) No doubt due to the haste in which the book was produced in 1900, Hill unfortunately printed Denslow's pictorial copyright page on the verso of the "Introduction" rather than on the verso of the title page as required by law. Some copies, as is the case with the present copy, left the publisher before the mistake was ... Read more

NEILL, JOHN R.. NEILL,JOHN R. ORIGINAL ART: SCALAWAGONS OF OZ. When Ruth Plumly Thompson left Oz publishers Reilly and Lee, John R. Neill took over as author of the Oz series while still continuing to illustrate the books. The first Oz book Neill wrote was Wonder City of Oz and Scalawagons was the next (1941). This is a wonderful large finished pen and ink drawing by Neill. Depicted is a Scalawagon (a magical car) and a man rushing to get into the car. He is surrounded by 10-15 strange winged creatures called Bell-Men (because they have bell's on their heads). The image measures 12 1/2" wide x 8 1/2" matted. This does not appear in the book. It is from the estate of the Neill family.

Great Barrington, MA: Michael McCurdy, 2004. McCurdy, Michael. Quarto. One of eight copies. A suite of twenty-five laser prints of drawings by Michael McCurdy, each hand-colored, signed, and numbered by the artist. The drawings were originally done by McCurdy at the request of the University Press of Kansas, which commissioned the artist to illustrate its Kansas Centennial Edition of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz in 1999. McCurdy's drawings are bold and strong, yet still dream-like, providing a new interpretation of Baum's classic children's tale. The prints are carefully hand-colored with subtle tints and tone. The prints are housed in an emerald green clamshell box, together with a copy of the book, which is signed by the artist with an original drawing of the Scarecrow. In addition to McCurdy's illustrations, the Centennial Edition features a Foreword by Ray Bradbury. Extremely fine.
