Brendan J Sherar
Chairman & Chief Executive Officer


The original founder of Biblio, Brendan has a background in executive management, technical management, programming and database development in the publishing, high tech, and library industries. He is also a former "brick and mortar" and online bookseller, and has been in the book business for 12 years.

Originally from Wyoming, Brendan is a "naturalized native" of Western North Carolina, having lived in the area for the better part of the past 30 years. He is married to his beautiful wife, Tracy, with two equally beautiful daughters, Sophia (aged 8) and Katherine (6). He enjoys reading history and modern literature, with favorite authors including Italo Calvino, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Cormac McCarthy, Philip Roth, and Don Delillo.

Allen Singleton
President & Chief Operating Officer


Allen is an ex-academic with abiding interests in the world of books, computers and Daoism. He has a PhD in comparative philosophy of religions from the University of Chicago. He left academics six years ago and decided to pursue a career in IT. He has extensive experience both as an IT administrator and as a manager. At Biblio, he has found the ideal opportunity to marry his interests and help nurture a dynamic and rapidly growing business.

Allen and his wife, Cassie, have two wonderful daughters, aged 2 and 4. Allen enjoys playing guitar and likes to keep his hand in his field of study by reading odd bits of Daoist texts. Favorite books and authors: Don Quixote, Neal Stephenson, and Chuang Tzu (Zhuang Zi).

Stephen Bakes
Director of Operations


Stephen Bakes brings more than 14 years of experience in bookselling. For nine years prior to coming to Biblio in 2005, he operated a large brick-and-mortar used bookstore, and has been involved with internet bookselling since its inception.

Stephen divides his reading time between fiction and nonfiction. His current favorite fiction author is David Mitchell, twice short-listed for the Man Booker Prize. He lives with his wife and two dogs on top of a mountain, in a little log cabin.

James Hemphill
Chief Technology Officer


James Hemphill is a self-taught computer programmer that has 12 years experience with software application development and data warehousing. His favorite hobbies are chess, automotive repair, and fiddling with his unreleased Linux distribution.

James has been a consultant with Biblio since 2003 and joined the team as the Chief Technology Officer in the Summer of 2005.

He is married to his wonderful wife Victoria, together they have two magnificent cats Griffin and Martin. His favorite authors are Robert Heinlien, Neal Stephenson, and Douglas Adams. Of late he has been reading Tom Robbins for the first time, and enjoying it thoroughly.
Catherine Carmichael
Service & Support Supervisor


A native of North Carolina, Catherine Carmichael recently graduated from the literature and creative writing program at UNC-Asheville. She joined Biblio, Inc. in 2006 and has combined her knowledge of books, authors, bookselling markets and computer technology to provide service and support to customers and booksellers.

Catherine enjoys reading, working on her novel, and web design and development. Her favorite authors include Vladimir Nabokov, Marcel Proust, Frederick Exley, Mark Danielewski and Jose Saramago.
Frieda Carson
Service & Support Specialist


Frieda is a fairly recent addition to our staff, having joined our customer service team in February of this year. She has extensive experience in service both as an office manager and a fine dining floor manager.

She holds a degree in literature and enjoys reading in many different genres and subjects. Her current reading is related to Greek mythology and Jungian archetypes. Originally from Indiana, she enjoys living in the mountains as opposed to flat farm country, and loves camping and hiking, even in the wintertime.

Frieda is writing a science fiction novel and living in Asheville, N.C. with no children, cats, dogs or husbands. She does have two houseplants.
Tracy Sherar
Business Analyst & Warehouse Operations


Tracy is a native of North Carolina. She has BA in History with a specialization in Classics. Upon graduation, she backpacked through thirteen different countries, which has helped her worldview. She is a former bookstore owner and continues in bookselling via the internet.

Tracy has a lovely husband and two wonderful daughters, Sophia and Katie. Two dogs, two parakeets, and a cat round out the rest of the family. She enjoys gardening and reading, favorite authors range from Neil Gaiman to Jane Austen. She collects Tasha Tudor.
Jim Hurst
Software Engineer


Jim brings two decades of experience as a developer and administrator to the Biblio IT team. He has particular interests in the user interface and information security, as well as a strong affinity for open source software.

Jim is a lifelong bibliophile, reading lots of speculative and historical fiction. Among his favorite authors are Jared Diamond, Alistair Reynolds, Alan Furst, Charles Stross, Philip Kerr, and John Burdette. Favorite pastimes are mountain biking, small boats, and frisbee golf. Current projects include raising two teenagers with his wonderful wife Caroline, the restoration of the American chestnut tree, and building a hidden empire of mountain bike trails in the national forests. Megan Sherar
Latin American Project Coordinator for BiblioWorks


Megan Sherar was raised in Asheville, NC but has been living in South America for the past 5 years. As a Peace Corps volunteer, she lived in a small community in rural Bolivia for two years, working on community development projects such as bee keeping and building a small library. In 2005, Megan returned to Bolivia as the Latin America Project Coordinator for Biblio Charitable Works, Inc., an outreach project of Biblio.com. Since that time she has established six community libraries in and around Sucre, the capital of Bolivia. These libraries provide very important resources to children and students who have no access to educational materials in their schools or homes.

Megan enjoys coming home once a year to be with her family and friends, and while in Bolivia, enjoys reading books in Spanish by authors such as Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Pablo Coelho, and Isabel Allende.
