Large, thick 4to (9 x 11 1/4"), blue cloth, pictorial paste- on, 261p., FINE IN ORIGINAL PUBLISHER'S BOX WITH COLOR PLATE ON COVER, and with original glassine as well. Box is slightly scuffed but VG+. First edition. 6 mythical tales from ancient Greece are illustrated by Sterrett with 10 truly magnificent color plates (with tissue guards), color pictorial title page, many lovely black & whites as well as yellow pictorial endpapers. Done when she was only 20 years of age, this was Sterrett's (Chicago born) second book. She is often referred to as the "female Kay Nielsen"! After completing Tanglewood Tales, Sterrett became seriously ill and was forced to stop illustrating for several years. This is a beautiful copy.

Front cover has blind-stamped lettering and stylized illustrations of centaurs with bows and arrows. Blind-stamped, faded gilt lettering on spine. Covers, in a protective wrapper, are slightly aged, shelf-worn. Spine soiled, w/ends and corners bumped and worn. Edges soiled. The centaurs from the front cover reappear, in gray-on-gray, eps, foxed to varying degrees. The fanciful, tipped-in illustrations in vibrant colors are exquisite. Interior slightly aged, but clean, crisp and tight.

Tanglewood Tales has the original pictorial grey binding with red lettering and illustrations to the front board and spine. The binding is in Very Good condition with light marks to the front board and back board, discolouration to the spine, very slight corner knocks, and very slight wear to the top and bottom of the spine. The Edmund Dulac illustration and lettering to the front board is still very bright and this is a very attractive binding for this collectable Edmund Dulac Tanglewood Tales book. Tanglewood Tales has 222 numbered pages with 12 full colour illustrations on glossy stock paper, which is correct as per the list of illustrations to the front of the book. There are attractive illustrated double page front endpapers and rear endpapers designed by Edmund Dulac that matches the design to the front board. There is a “This Book Belongs To” box to the front pastedown that has not been filled in and has been left blank. The pages are in overall Very Good condition with very light age toning and spotting but with the plates on the glossy paper remaining free of even these minor defects.� ED042

Bound in full green calf with decorative gilt border to front and rear board, red title label to spine, five raised bands, extra gilt tooling to spine, logo and motto ('Scientiae turrim fortissimam claves aperiunt') of the King Edward VI Grammar School emblazoned in gilt on front board, gilt tooling to leather turn-in, blue marbled endpapers and endpapers. Boards in very good condition with limited signs of wear, top board edge rubbed and chipped in one place, fore edge and tail edge vivid, spine faded to brown from sunlight, raised bands showing general shelf wear, school prize award to G.L.
