THE PASTURES OF HEAVEN

STEINBECK, John

1932. STEINBECK, John. THE PASTURES OF HEAVEN. NY: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932. Hardcover, green cloth stamped in gilt, in a very nice original dust jacket. First Edition, first issue of Steinbeck's rare second book. [Goldstone & Payne A20a]. Brewer, Warren & Putnam published 2,500 copies of this title- 1,600 copies were bound but only 650 copies were sold. The remaining sheets and books were eventually sold to Robert O. Ballou and resold under that publisher's imprint. Signed presentation from Steinbeck on the front endpaper: "For Harold Bailey, John Steinbeck." One of Steinbeck's scarcest books, especially in a nice original dust jacket, especially signed, and especially in as nice condition as this copy! Near fine (just an extremely minor sliver fade at the head of the spine else covers, gilt and text bright, tight & clean; just a hint of browning to front endpaper; extremely minor wear & a few very, very tiny tears, about 1/16" inch; (few puckers to paper, very tiny smudge rear cover) d/j. $45,000.00.

NY, Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932, first edition, dust jacket. Hardcover. With a first issue dust jacket, his second book, Goldstone & Payne A2a, Morrow 14, this first edition is one of only 1,650 copies actually bound (from a print-run of 2,500 sets of sheets), only a paltry 650 copies were actually sold, this was his first book with what could be called the Steinbeck "sound," the book is comprised of inter-related stories set in a valley that came to represent Steinbeck Country, in these stories something is not quite right with the inhabitants of this otherwise peaceful valley, according to Harry Thornton Moore in his first critical study of Steinbeck's works, The Pastures of Heaven "is the most popular of Steinbeck's three early books. It points the way to most of his subsequent writing". Top and bottom of spine with slight fade/discoloration where light could peek over the jacket, else a lovely copy in a jacket with minute wear at the tips, this is easily the best first issue jacket I have seen.

Jacket verso is well-reinforced with tape, but it is still a very good copy.

A Very Good plus copy with some light foxing to the boards in Very Good unclipped dj with chipping to the head & foot of the spine, a small damp spot near bottom of spine and a closed tear. Previous owner name on front jacket flap. A very uncommon Steinbeck title in a very collectible state. The text sheets for this 4th issue are from the original 2500 sets printed by Brewer, Warren & Putnam for the 1932 First Edition of this title of which only 1000 sets were bound and only 650 copies sold. BW&P sold the remaining 1850 sets to Robert Ballou in 1932 who published approximately 1000 sets in 1932. Of the 850 remaining original printed sets, Ballou published an undetermined number of copies in the third issue. That number was probably in the 500 copies range and in 1935 Ballow sold the remaining copies (350?) to Covici Friede and this 4th issue appeared in 1935. .

THE PASTURES OF HEAVEN

John Steinbeck

5 x 7 1/2 in. 294 pgs. Book was remaindered and Robert Ballou bought up the copies, then tipped in his own title pg with copyright info in the same font. The line where a razor was used to cut the original away, and where the Ballou pg was glued on, is quite clear. Green cloth with gilt lettering on cover and spine (Robert Ballou at base of spine. Upper edge of text block tinted black. Condition is GOOD ; no wear to corners or edges, covers very clean, spine slightly sunned and darkened. The lower front has a whitish spot across it, most likely from water, which is not evident in the text, which is verty clean. Then some damn mouse chewed a 1/2 inch crescent out of the edge of the lower front cover, gnawing a tiny bit of the pgs up to pg. 6. This rare first with the Ballou title pg is really in pretty nice shape, and is a prize for any collector of Steinbeck. And shelved, the tiny chewed area will never show. Fiction. RGR
