London: John Kendrick, 27 Ludgate Street, St. Paul’s, MDCCCLIV (1854). Sm. thick 8vo, xxx, 658pp. With a frontispiece and 7 plates, including 4 after John Martin. Dedication page with color-printed floral garland and ink inscription “To Frances / April 1860” preceding frontispiece. Original publisher’s full morocco stamped richly in gilt on covers and backstrip, all edges gilt, plain yellow coated endpapers, occasional browning, hinges just slightly cracking. A pleasant edition of Milton including a few very reduced prints after the famous John Martin illustrations, but notable for being in a very attractive publisher’s de luxe trade binding. Not noted by King, McLean, or Morris and Levin.
Edinburgh: Gall & Inglis, 1910. Beautiful book for your collection. Interior solid, clean except for penciled poem on rfep,inscription dated 1910 on ffep, and owner info fep. All are neat. Rich dark chocolate endpapers. 491 pages, with steel engravings and decorations around the borders of every page. Silk ribbon and a book mark as found. Boards are green with black design; gilt cameos and ribbons on the front, plus a 4-1/2" by 3-1/2" deeply indented gilt and burgundy shape surrounded by gilt borders. The central design is probably 1/16" indented. Boards beveled on the edges. All page edges gilt. Spine has elaborate black and gilt design, plus the words "Milton--Illustrated--Landscape Series of Poets--Gall & Inglis". Back is blind stamped with most of the front design. There is shelfwear to the corners and spine ends, including bumping, rubbing, scuffing. But overall this is a book that will be picked up and looked at, for sure. . Not Clear. Half-Leather.
