The Prince and the Pauper: A Tale for People of All Ages

TWAIN, Mark

Boston: James R. Osgood. 1882. First. First American edition, first issue with Franklin Press imprint. Publisher's deluxe binding of half-calf and marbled papercovered boards. The paper on the edges of the boards is a bit worn, and some rubbing to the extremities, as almost always seems the case, else a nice, tight, very good or better copy, with the spine gilt easily readable. On a lark a prince and a pauper change stations in life, allowing Twain to critique various legal and moral injustices. A nice copy of a classic children's tale, scarce in the deluxe binding. Prince and the Pauper

TWAIN Mark

1882. First Edition . TWAIN, Mark. The Prince and the Pauper, A Tale for Young People of All Ages. Boston: James R. Osgood, 1882. Octavo, original three-quarter brown morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, raised bands, marbled boards, endpapers, and edges. $3200.First American edition, first issue, second state, of “the best book for young folks that was ever written,” (Harriet Beecher Stowe), in original three-quarter morocco binding.Thought by his family and many of his friends to be his best work, The Prince and the Pauper represented a risky departure for Twain in his attempt to write a serious and thoughtful adventure story for children. He considered publishing the book anonymously, as he feared that his reputation as a humorist would hurt its chances with the public, but finally decided to put his name to it, “and let it help me or hurt me as the fates shall direct.” “The Prince and the Pauper was to be an act of culture. He had no hesitation, as he had had with Tom Sawyer, over whether this was a book for children or for grownups. From the very start he knew that he was writing for children” (Kaplan, 238, 248). According to Twain, Harriet Beecher Stowe once told him, “I am reading your Prince and the Pauper for the fourth time… And I know it is the best book for young folks that was ever written” (Kaplan, 240). First issue, second state, with Franklin Press imprint on copyright page and “estate” changed to “state” on page 124, line 1. BAL 3402. Johnson, 40. MacDonnell, 44-45. McBride, 70. THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER

Twain, Mark

1881. A Tale for Young People of All Ages. With One Hundred and Ninety Illustrations. London: Chatto & Windus, 1881. 32 pp ads dated Nov 1881. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of Twain's historical tale for the young. During the last years of Henry VIII's reign, a prince finds a pauper who looks exactly like him and persuades him to exchange clothes -- at which time the prince is chased from the palace, is forced to live as a pauper, and experiences first-hand the wretchedness of the poor and the cruelty of the law.~The London edition was intentionally published before the American edition, for copyright purposes; it was published in late November 1881, followed quickly by (or perhaps simultaneous with) the Montreal edition, both of which were followed by the (1882-dated) Boston edition in mid-to-late December. This English edition is much scarcer than the American edition, perhaps because it came out during the brief period when flourished the ill-conceived idea of binding leaves with staples; said staples quickly proved to do the job miserably, so by the mid-1880s binders reverted to using string.~This copy has the primary ad catalogue dated November 1881, and is in near-fine condition (minor darkening of the spine, volume slightly askew as usual for this 400-page volume); there is light damage to the gutter between pages 176 and 177, the result of the aforementioned stapled gatherings. The original patterned endpapers are clean and intact (remarkable for such a hefty book); the front free one has an early gift inscription (son to father, December 1882). McBride pp 70-72; Blanck 3396.
