TWAIN, Mark

Boston: James R. Osgood. 1882. First. First American edition, first issue with Franklin Press imprint. Publisher's deluxe binding of half-calf and marbled papercovered boards. The paper on the edges of the boards is a bit worn, and some rubbing to the extremities, as almost always seems the case, else a nice, tight, very good or better copy, with the spine gilt easily readable. On a lark a prince and a pauper change stations in life, allowing Twain to critique various legal and moral injustices. A nice copy of a classic children's tale, scarce in the deluxe binding. THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER

Twain, Mark

1881. A Tale for Young People of All Ages. With One Hundred and Ninety Illustrations. London: Chatto & Windus, 1881. 32 pp ads dated Nov 1881. Original red cloth pictorially decorated in black. First Edition of Twain's historical tale for the young. During the last years of Henry VIII's reign, a prince finds a pauper who looks exactly like him and persuades him to exchange clothes -- at which time the prince is chased from the palace, is forced to live as a pauper, and experiences first-hand the wretchedness of the poor and the cruelty of the law. The London edition was intentionally published before the American edition, for copyright purposes; it was published in late November 1881, followed quickly by (or perhaps simultaneous with) the Montreal edition, and then the (1882-dated) Boston edition in mid-to-late December.~This copy has the primary ad catalogue dated November 1881, and is in near-fine condition (spine slightly faded, but less so than usual). This English edition is much scarcer than the American edition, perhaps because it came out during the brief period when the ill-conceived idea of stapled books was in effect (staples quickly proved to do the job miserably, so binders reverted to using string). McBride pp 70-72; Blanck 3396. Housed in a morocco-backed clamshell case.

1882. A Tale for Young People of All Ages. With One Hundred and Ninety-Two Illustrations. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1882. Original publisher's half morocco with gilt-decorated spine, and marbled boards and leaf edges. First American Edition of Twain's historical tale for the young. This was actually published in December 1881, just after the London edition and the Montreal copyright edition.~In this copy, the text is in the corrected state on pages 124, 263 and 362 (there were actually several printings bearing the date 1882).~This copy is in the publisher's original half morocco, one of several bindings available to the purchaser ar varying costs. According to a contemporary prospectus, THE PRINCE AND THE PAUPER was available in the usual green cloth (with or without gilt edges), "library" binding (full sheep), half calf, or -- as here -- half morocco.~This copy is in near-fine condition (minor wear to the edges of the paper-covered boards, but scarcely any wear at all to the morocco); the front endpaper is cracked and reglued. All of these leather bindings are considerably scarcer than the green cloth one, and are rather scarce in this condition. McBride pp 70-72; Blanck 3402. Housed in a morocco-backed slipcase.

The Prince And The Pauper: A Tale for Young People of All Ages

Twain, Mark (Clemens, Samuel)

Boston: James R. Osgood, 1882 First American edition, with corrected text in second state binding. Bound in publisher's green cloth, lettering and illustrations stamped in gilt, ruling and decorations stamped in black. A very good copy, with wear to the extremities, light rubbing to the rear panel, bright gilt, spine starting inside the rear cover, otherwise sturdy and intact spine, former owner's bookplate to the front free endpaper, otherwise bright and clean interior. Overall, a bright and attractive copy. BAL 3402. The Prince and the Pauper is Twain's first attempt at historical fiction. Specifically, this novel, set in the 16th century, tells the story a young Prince Edward VI of England and a peasant boy named Tom Canty. After a chance meeting, the two boys decide to switch places and experience how the other half lives. Although the story is fiction, The Prince and the Pauper is decisively plausible; as Twain explains, "It may have happened, it may not have happened: but it could have happened." This first American edition was published shortly after the London and Montreal first editions.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.
