FLEMING, Ian.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1963. Octavo. Original white cloth backed paper covered boards, titles to spine gilt, black endpapers, top edge stained black. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. 48 pages of illustrations from photos. Boards lightly rubbed and bumped at extremities. A very good copy in the jacket. First edition, first impression. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the title page, "To 'a man called "CD" ' from Ian". The printed author's note reads "Nothing remains but to dedicate this biased, cranky but at least zestful hotchpotch to my friends and colleagues on The Sunday Times in London and abroad, and particularly to a man called 'CD', who pulled the trigger.....". Sir Charles Denis Hamilton was a close friend and colleague of Ian Fleming, a director of Kemsley Newspapers and editor of the Sunday Times. Fleming had written seven James Bond novels when he was approached by Hamilton with a plum journalistic assignment: to take a five-week, all-expenses-paid trip to visit the world's most exciting cities. Fleming's trip took in Hong Kong, Macau and Tokyo, then Honolulu, and back home via the major US cities. The material he gathered for this book also furnished much of the backdrop and research for the five Bond novels and seven short stories that would follow.

Thrilling Cities.

FLEMING, Ian.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1963. Octavo. Original white cloth-backed grey boards, titles to spine gilt, black endpapers, top edge block. With the dust jacket. Housed in a custom black quarter morocco solander box. 48 pages of illustrations from photographs. A superb copy in the bright dust jacket. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the half-title "To John, His usual copy from Ian." An excellent association, the recipient being noted literary scholar John Hayward (1905-1965) who "for the last dozen years of his life edited the Book Collector, read by collectors, dealers, and librarians throughout the English-speaking world. Among those with whom he worked was Ian Fleming … the Book Collector's founder and chief proprietor" (ODNB). Fleming's five-week round-the-world travelogue written for the Sunday Times is highly uncommon in this condition, all the more so in presentation state.

Thrilling Cities (First Edition, First State)

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1963. First Edition, First Printing, First State. Hardcover. About Fine/Near Fine. Grey patterened paper over boards with quarter white cloth spine, title stamped in gilt onto spine, top edge stained black, black endpapers, 8vo (8-3/4 inches tall), pp. 223, illustrated with 82 B&W photographs. Volume toned at edges, front pastedown with illustrated "Redpath Museum - McGill University" decorative bookplate, name in pencil verso ffep. Price-clipped DJ with faint toning to edges, tiny rubs to spine ends, three pinhead-sized dots of pink missing from foot of spine panel and an unobtrusive scratch to front panel. A very unusual copy - preceeding the first state of the first Cape edition - with all errors as called for, but lacking the erratum slip or any evidence of it ever having been there. This is because some copies were shipped overseas during the first two days of the production run, prior to the selection of an incorrect photo being noticed. Hence the need for an erratum slip. Gilbert notes there are just two other known copies of the first state that lack the errata slip. This copy also in the first state DJ, with the lamination uncorrected. Ref. Gilbert, A16a(1.1).

These were serialised in The Sunday Times (1959-60) and are collected here for the first time in America in book form.
