Contains papers on the nature of the House Speaker under Speakers Thomas O'Neill, James Wright, Thomas Foley, Newt Gingrich and others. This conference was sponsored by the Congressioonal Research Service of the Library of Congress. It is namwed in memory of Joseph Cannon who served as Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1903 to 1911. This was the first conference on the changing nature of the position and role of the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives. The conference was organized to commemorate the elction on November 0, 1903 of Representative Joseph Cannon and was held in the Caucus Room named for that Speaker.
