Born to a family of Neapolitan pirates, Cossa became a lawyer, a general, and a leading figure in the Council of Pisa. The aim of the council was to end the schism between the two rival Popes in Rome and Avignon. To this end they deposed both Gregory XII and Benedict XIII and elected a new third Pope, Alexander V in 1409. But when he died the following year Cossa was elected the new Pope, having been ordained as a priest the previous day. .
