x+303 pages with photographs, bibliography and index. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's grey cloth with blue lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. Frank McConnell perceives literature and film-the narrative arts-as twin expressions of humanity's central act of self definition. McConnell's thesis is that film has already recapitulated the entire 5000 year history of Western narrative traditions. By analyzing the two forms in terms of the archetypes of Epic, Romance, Melodrama and Satire, McConnell shows how the elements essential to the literature are also present in popular and classic films. Pencil underlining throughout, stain at heal edge. Jacket stained at heal edge, spine edges chipped, corners and spine rubbed else a good to very good copy in like jacket.
