A Vanished World

Vishniac, Roman

Gordonsville, Virginia, U.S.A.: Farrar Straus & Giroux, 1983. Roman Vishniac's A Vanished World is an extraordinary record of the lives of German and Eastern European Jews in the years immediately preceding the Holocaust. Vishniac, a Russian Jew, began to take photographs of village life during World War I, when Russian Jews who lived near the front were accused of being German spies and were deported to Siberia. He later moved to Germany, where he witnessed the horrible events of Kristallnacht and the anti-Jewish legislation that allowed Hitler to declare his enemies stateless and therefore unworthy of international protection. As we study Vishniac's photographs--a surviving fraction of the more than 16,000 he took--we are aware that we are seeing the faces of those soon to die, witnessing a world that has all but perished. Yet that world, of shops and schools, of busy streets and quiet farms, remains with us if only as a ghostly memory, thanks in part to Vishniac's compassionate eye. --This ... Read more

Vanished World

Roman Vishniac, Elie Wiesel,

Farrar Straus Giroux, September 1983. Hardcover. Used - Very Good. A Vanished World is Roman Vishniac's celebrated collection of photographs taken between 1934 and 1939. Vishniac walked across Poland, the Ukraine, Czechoslovakia, Romania, Hungary, Latvia, and Lithuania with his camera, preserving for posterity images of a Jewish way of life fated soon to be destroyed. Of the 16,000 photographs he managed to take -- secretly and under dangerous circumstances -- he was able to rescue only about 2,000. Some he sewed into his clothing when he came to the United States in 1940, most he left with his father in a village in France for the duration of the war. A Vanished World brings together nearly 200 of these images, introduced to us by Vishniac's own moving Preface and captions. Very nice clean, tight copy free of any marks. The inside flap of dust jacket slightly creased.
