New York: Dover Publications Inc., 1973. 264 Pages. This is Volume One of Two. No defects noted and the interior text and illustration pages are bright and tight. This Dover edition, first published in 1973, is an unabridged republication of the work first published in London in 1844. This edition contains an introduction by Marjorie Halpin, which was first published in 1965 by The Smithsonian Institution in Catlin's Indian Gallery-The George Catlin Paintings in the United States National Museum. This edition contains both the complete text and photographic reproductions of 257 of Catlin's original oil paintings. The artist-author had prepared these oils over a period of years expressly to illustrate his written report. The first edition of the work was issued with simple line cuts or cartoons derived from the original paintings, photography then still being in its infancy. The first edition line illustrations have been retained here only where the corresponding oil painting was not found or never exi ... Read more

2 Volumes. xvi+ 264 pages with frontispiece, drawings, and plates; xvi+266 with frontispiece map, drawings, plates and appendices. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/8") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Unabridged republication of the fourth (1844) edition. George Catilin's work is still one of the most readable books about the Indians of the Plains, capturing the tribes when they were still in touch with their most important traditions. It has also become an invaluable historic and ethnographic document for study of the American West. The Mandan tribe, which Catlin so carefully set down, disappeared in a small-pox epidemic only five years after his visit. Other tribes changed radically, their traditional mode of life seen only in Catlin's notes and illustrations. Condition:  Marks-a-lot through page 33 of volume 1, corners bumped and rubbed, edge wear else a very good set.
